Hawk wrestlers split duals on Senior Night

SULLY — Cole Nickell, Noah Zylstra and Blake Wehrle will have one more opportunity to wrestle at home. Lynnville-Sully’s three seniors competed Tuesday at home on Senior Night with mixed results.

Lynnville-Sully hosts the South Iowa Cedar League tournament Saturday. All three Hawk seniors will be on the mats at home one more time.

Zylstra went 2-0 while Nickell and Wehrle, just like their team did, went 1-1 Tuesday against visiting Martensdale-St. Marys and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. The Hawks rolled to a 68-12 win over Martensdale-St. Marys, then lost 46-27 to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. The EBF Rockets tallied a 72-12 decision over the MSM Blue Devils.

Zylstra pinned Lane Gehringer of MSM in 1 minute, 26 seconds at 182 pounds. Taking on Austin Angle of EBF, Zylstra notched another pin in 1:13.

On Jan. 17 at the Wayne Duals, Zylstra and Nickell each reached their 100th-career win mark. Zylstra pinned Ben Mason of Albia in 1:16 to notch the milestone. Nickell came up with a 38-second pin of Dylan Heideman of Bedford/Lenox in the final dual of the day for his 100th career win.

“It was a lot of fun to get that,” Zylstra said of his 100th victory as a Lynnville-Sully wrestler. “I really wasn’t thinking about that going into the season or even the day it happened. It’s nice to have it, but we’re just pushing for a run at the state tournament right now.”

“I had those three forfeit wins early in the day at Wayne, so it was great to have a contested match for the 100th win,” Nickell said. “I knew I wanted to get the 100th win and so I just went out and got it quick.”

Nickell won by forfeit against Martensdale-St. Marys at 113 pounds. He and EBF’s Adam Proctor gave the fans all their money’s worth Tuesday. Proctor came up with an 11-8 win over Nickell.

“As a team, we just have to keep moving forward, try our best in practice and work hard on the mat for the best result,” Nickell said about the Hawks as they close out the regular season and head to Class 1A sectionals on Feb. 7.

Wehrle had a part in two of the quickest pins of the night Tuesday in the 195-pound division. He used a bear hug to take Zach Delong of Martensdale-St. Marys right to his back on the mat in the first match. Wehrle recorded the pin in 40 seconds. Wehrle was pinned by Class 1A fifth-ranked Hunter Johnston of EBF in 29 seconds.

Josh Dunsbergen was 2-0 at 106 with a 12-6 decision over Tanner Rea of EBF and a forfeit win. At 170, Jack Hardin pinned Bret Wursta of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in 1:45 and had a forfeit win against MSM.

Lynnville-Sully’s Shannon Dunsbergen was 2-0 by forfeits at 285. Kyle Kramer was pinned by MSM’s Logan Schumacher, who is ranked 10th in Class 1A, and by EBF’s Josh Johnson at 152 pounds.

The Hawks recorded eight forfeit wins against Martensdale-St. Marys. At 138, Cayden Johnson won by forfeit then was pinned in 26 seconds by Class 1A’s second-ranked Jeren Glosser of EBF. Sage Zylstra had a forfeit win and lost 7-2 to the Rockets’ Alex Hanna at 120 pounds.

Lynnville-Sully’s Carson Dunsbergen got past MSM’s Hunter Patrick 8-6 at 126 pounds but lost 12-1 to EBF’s Dakota Boyer. Caden Dunsbergen notched a 15-0 technical fall over Jake Catron of Martensdale-St. Marys at 132 and was pinned by Cody Brown of EBF in 3:15.

Bryson Barnett had the first win of the dual against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont for the Hawks. Barnett pinned Ryan Henkle in 1:05 for the victory at 145 pounds. Barnett was pinned earlier in 3:17 by MSM’s Alex Craig.

At 160, Colten Arment won by forfeit against MSM and was pinned by EBF’s Dalton Griffiths in 1:38. The Hawks’ 220-pound Cooper Scandridge won by forfeit in the MSM dual then was pinned in 45 seconds by EBF’s Bryce Wursta.
