Probation sentence for woman who attacked grandmother

An 18-year-old Newton woman will serve two years of probation for an incident last summer in which police say she stole a debit card and check from her 69-year-old grandmother, then physically attacked her when she was caught.

Rachel M. Scott pleaded guilty Wednesday to forgery, a Class D felony. Two other charges were dropped as part of a plea agreement.

Court records show that on July 9, 2014, while Scott was living with her grandmother, she stole her debit card and forged a check in her grandmother’s name. When confronted, Scott got in her grandmother’s face and demanded to be punched. The victim grabbed her, and Scott struck her grandmother in the face three times, causing swelling and bruising. She also knocked the victim to the ground causing an injury to her grandmother’s finger.

Scott was initially charged with serious domestic assault, unauthorized use of credit card and forgery.

District Associate Judge Steven Holwerda granted Scott a deferred sentence. She is ordered to pay $750 in civil penalties and an unknown amount of restitution to the court, among other court costs.
