Area wrestling teams assigned to sectional, district tournaments

Wrestling sectionals for Iowa Class 1A and 2A teams are set. The district tournaments for Class 3A have been assigned.

Teams have a little more than a week remaining in the 2014-15 regular season. Conference tournaments for the five area teams are scheduled for Saturday and Jan. 31.

Colfax-Mingo, Collins-Maxwell/Baxter and Prairie City-Monroe wrestlers compete Saturday in the Heart of Conference tournament in Gilbert. Matches begin at 10 a.m. Lynnville-Sully competes in the South Iowa Cedar League tournament at home in Sully on Jan. 31.

Newton High’s Cardinals will host the 2015 Little Hawkeye Conference tournament on Jan. 31. Matches begin at 10 a.m.

Junior Hunter Versteegh is out to defend his 113-pound LHC championship. Bryce Tish, a junior wrestling at 145 this season, placed third at 132 a year ago. Caden Manning, a sophomore, was fifth in the conference 220-pound division.

Following the conference tournament, Newton will hit the practice room mats hard to prepare for the Class 3A District 1 tournament on Feb. 14. Ankeny Centennial is hosting the district tournament. Other teams in the tournament are Ankeny, Des Moines Lincoln, Marshalltown, Norwalk, Pella and Southeast Polk.

Sectionals for Class 1A and Class 2A are Feb. 7. The top two wrestlers in each weight class at sectionals advance to district tournaments on Feb. 14.

Lynnville-Sully, CMB and Colfax-Mingo are in the Class 1A Sectional 7 tournament hosted by BGM. Others in the sectional are Belle Plaine, HLV, Iowa Valley and West Marshall. Qualifying wrestlers advance to the Class 1A District 4 tournament at Pleasantville.

PCM joins Knoxville, Davis County, Chariton, Albia and Centerville in the Class 2A Sectional 7 at Centerville. Qualifying wrestlers advance to the Class 2A District 4 tournament at Fairfield.

The top two wrestlers in each weight class at district tournaments qualifying for the 2015 Iowa State Wrestling Tournament Feb. 19-21 at Des Moines’ Wells Fargo Arena.
