Freshman girls go undefeated at home tournament

Newton High’s freshman girls combined for 39 steals in two games Monday at home. They converted a lot of those into points.

The young Cardinals defeated Roland-Story 45-21 to open the night of action at NHS. They powered past North Polk 57-17. Newton was 2-0 in its four-team tournament.

Newton rolled to a 14-0 lead on Roland-Story early and was up 23-7 at halftime. The Cardinals shot 40 percent, 20-of-49, from the field. They were 2-of-3 at the free-throw line. They had 18 steals.

Randi Walters scored 15 points and made six steals. Taylor Ryan tossed in 12 points and swiped the ball four times for the Cardinals. Marcelina Marvelli added eight points.

Anna Forsyth had six points and two assists. Ali Bestell scored four points and controlled eight rebounds. Addy Blom had eight rebounds.

Newton followed much the same pattern against North Polk, leading 17-4 at the end of the first quarter. It was in complete control by halftime up 33-6. The Cardinals had 21 steals.

Newton was 25-of-65 from the field for 38 percent and went 2-of-11 at the line.

Walters led the Cardinals with 18 points followed by Ryan with 15 points. Marvelli scored 10 points. Blom had seven points, Forsyth had four points and Bestell had three points, plus pulled down 15 rebounds.

Forsyth had four steals. Credited with three steals each were Ryan, Marvelli, Blom, Bestell and Tessa Keeton. Marvelli and Forsyth each and four assists and Keeton handed out three assists.

On Saturday morning, the Cardinal freshman girls lost 50-45 to Carlisle. Ryan scored 15 points and Blom had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Marvelli and Walters each tossed in six points. Bestell had four points and 10 rebounds. Forsyth handed out four assists.

The freshmen play at home Tuesday against Boone.
