Hawk boys lose, win on the road

Playing two road games over the weekend, Lynnville-Sully’s boys couldn’t dwell on Friday night’s 69-46 loss at Montezuma. The Hawk boys bounced back to claim a 47-35 victory at Iowa Valley Saturday.

Going 1-1 in South Iowa Cedar League play, the Hawks improved to 8-4 overall and 7-4 in conference action.

“The boys responded tough today. We played real well defensively,” said Nick Harthoorn, Lynnville-Sully head coach after the win over Iowa Valley. “We struggled early on the boards, but did a better job in the second half. Offensively, we did some nice things. We were able to knock down some shots from the outside.”

The Hawks pushed out to a 16-7 first-quarter lead on the Tigers. Iowa Valley held a 13-8 scoring edge in the second period and Lynnville-Sully was up 24-20 at the break.

Lynnville-Sully extended its lead with a 13-4 run in the third quarter. The Hawks kept the Tigers at bay down the stretch for the 12-point victory.

The Hawks had three players score in double figures led by Sage Ehresman with 11 points. Tyler Van Zante, who hit three 3-pointers, and Ben Trettin each had 10 points. Kyle Van Dyke had seven points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

Caleb James, Jesse Van Wyk and Canyon Kuhlmann each scored three points. The Hawks shot 38 percent, 16-of-42, from the field, which included 8-for-19 from 3-point range. They struggled a bit at the free-throw line, hitting 7-of-20.

Van Zante was credited with six steals and three assists. Trettin had four assists and James had two assists.

Iowa Valley got 17 points from Dakota Cooling. The Tigers shot 25 percent, 12-of-48, from the field. They had 20 turnovers.

On Friday at Montezuma, the Braves came out firing the basketball and blazed their way to a 42-20 halftime lead over the Hawks. The second half was pretty much even.

“Montezuma came out and shot the ball well, and we turned it over too much. We played a lot better in the second half. We just dug ourselves too big of a hole,” Harthoorn said.

Van Dyke had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds for Lynnville-Sully. He also had three assists and three blocked shots. Van Wyk scored 10 points and Ehresman tossed in nine points and handed out three assists.

Van Zante scored five points followed by Baker Zegers with four points and Kuhlmann with three points. James and Trettin each had two points.

Montezuma hit 10 3-pointers as a team and six of those were netted by Dakota Strong, who had 24 points. Jake Hasley scored 12 and Brody McKeag had 11 points.

Lynnville-Sully hosts North Mahaska Tuesday in SICL action.
