Gilbert scores easy sweep over Tigerhawks

COLFAX — Junior Colin Lourens scored 16 points and added eight rebounds, but the Colfax-Mingo boys’ basketball team stayed winless following a 71-41 loss to Class 3A No. 10 Gilbert here Thursday.

The game was part of a girl-boy varsity doubleheader that was originally scheduled for Jan. 6 but was postponed due to weather.

Jacob Lietz also scored eight points, dished out four assists and grabbed three rebounds in the loss for Colfax-Mingo (0-9, 0-9).

Freshman Jarod Nichols finished with nine points and four rebounds.

The Tigers got 23 points from Wes Greder and 17 from Ryan Blum. Gilbert is now 9-1 overall and 8-1 in Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference play.

Colfax-Mingo 15

COLFAX — The Colfax-Mingo girls’ basketball team struggled through another scoreless quarter Thursday night during a Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference contest with Gilbert.

The Tigers led 8-4 after one quarter but put the game away for good with a 16-0 advantage in the second and won by 39.

Freshman McKeely Tjaden had four points and five boards to lead the Tigerhawks (0-11, 0-10), while senior Sara Lahart also scored four and sophomore Dakota Hostetter pulled down a team-best eight boards. Senior Ivy Moore totaled three points, six rebounds and four steals.

Colfax-Mingo hit 5-of-38 from the floor, including 0-of-13 from long range.

Elise Powers had 12 points to lead Gilbert, which improved to 8-4 overall and 8-2 in HOIAC play. Paige Hoiberg also reached double-figures with 11 and had six steals.

Colfax-Mingo travels to Greene County tonight for another doubleheader. Action from Jefferson begins at 6 p.m.
