Winter sports are on a roll

The Pressbox

High school winter sports are back in full swing.

Talk is already turning to postseason with half of January gone.

Wrestling teams have two weeks worth of action remaining in the regular season. Regionals for Class 1A and 2A loom ahead on Feb. 7. District tournament for Class 3A, 2A and 1A are Feb. 14 with state tournament berths on the line.

Newton’s wrestling team won’t be hosting a Class 3A district tournament as it did in 2014. What the Cardinals will be doing on the final day of the regular season is hosting the 2015 Little Hawkeye Conference tournament. On Jan. 31, the NHS gym will be filled with the wrestling teams from the LHC. Action begins at 10 a.m.

The night before at NHS will be Legacy Night at the basketball games between Newton and Dallas Center-Grimes. Newton honors the late Dave Rowray, who coached and taught at Newton High School for 34 years. He guided the Cardinal boys to the state basketball tournament in 1992, which was the eighth time a Newton boys’ team reached the state tournament. No NHS team has not accomplished that since 1992.

Basketball teams have a few more weeks than wrestling teams until the end of the regular season. Girls’ teams play through the week of Feb. 13 and the boys’ teams have another week.

District boys’ tournament assignments are being released now. Class 2A and 1A were announced earlier this week and Class 4A and 3A assignments will be out Monday. Look for a story on those Tuesday in the Daily News.

Newton’s boys end swimming regular season action Jan. 31 with the district meet Feb. 7 and state on Feb. 14.

The Newton High bowling teams work on the lanes in regular-season action until Feb. 13. The Cardinals await their Class 2A district tournament assignments with state qualifying tournament son Feb. 17.
