Lynnville-Sully teams sweep past Keota

KEOTA — Winning on the road is never easy, but the Lynnville-Sully Hawk basketball teams got the job done Friday night against the Keota Eagles in South Iowa Cedar League play.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls, undefeated and ranked No. 9 in Class 1A, had a cold night shooting (29 percent) from the field. The Hawks girls were able to get to the free-throw line, cashing in on 20-of-28, to close out a 35-27 win over the Eagle girls.

Lynnville-Sully’s boys ripped the nets for eight 3-pointers on their way to a 60-50 win over the Eagles. The Hawks were up 31-24 at halftime and maintained their edge in the third quarter, outscoring Keota 14-10.

The Hawk girls used a 6-3 run in the second quarter to get a little breathing room. Lynnville-Sully was up 13-9 at halftime. The Hawks outscored the Eagles girls 10-5 in the third period and protected the lead despite Keota having a 13-12 scoring edge in the final eight minutes.

“The girls did a pretty good job of handling the physical play. Both teams play tough physical defense not letting either team get into any rhythm on offense,” said Jerry Hulsing, Lynnville-Sully girls’ head coach. “We did a good job at the start of the second half pushing our lead out, then struggled. We made enough free throws down the stretch to pull out the win.”

Lysandra James led the Hawk girls with 12 points and five rebounds. Madison Rasmusson had eight points, eight rebounds and two assists. Brenna Lanser had five points and eight rebounds.

Shelby Davis scored four points, dished out two assists and grabbed five rebounds. Marissa Vos made two steals and scored two points. Kasiah Ehresman added four points.

Keota got 16 points and 13 rebounds from Madison Sheetz. The Eagle girls’ shot just 20 percent, 9-of-45, from the field.

Work in the second and third quarter put the Lynnville-Sully boys in position to claim the win over Keota. The Hawks led 12-11 after one quarter then outscored the Eagles 32-23 in the next two quarters.

Lynnville-Sully led Keota 44-34 going into the fourth period. Each team tossed in 16 points in the final eight minutes.

“This was a big win for the Hawks. Its not easy to get Keota at their place,” said Nick Harthoorn, Lynnville-Sully boys’ head coach. “I thought we did a nice job of executing our game plan on the defensive end. Offensively, we played unselfish basketball. We had a nice balanced attack.”

The Hawk boys shot 43 percent, 23-of-54, from the field and went 6-of-16 at the free-throw line.

Tyler Van Zante scored 12 points, all on 3-pointers, and Jake Brand had nine points, all on threes, for Lynnville-Sully. Ben Trettin also had 12 points. Kyle Van Dyke scored 11 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots.

Sage Ehresman fired in eight points, controlled seven rebounds and made three assists. Trettin had four of the team’s seven steals. Jesse Van Wyk scored six points, had six rebounds and four assists in the game. Baker Zegers scored two points.

Isaiah Hahn tossed in 13 points and Nate Owen had 10 points for Keota. The Eagles were 19-of-54, 35 percent, from the field and sank 6-of-15 free throw tries.

Lynnville-Sully’s teams host Tri-County’s basketball squads Tuesday.
