Newton bowlers fire past Clarke

OSCEOLA — As bitter winter wind whipped the area, Newton High’s bowlers heated things up on the lanes against host Clarke in Thursday’s dual meet.

The Cardinal boys beat Clarke by 147 pins, 2,738-2,591. Newton’s girls powered past Clarke’s Lady Indians by 262 pins, 2,310-2,048.

It was the first competition for the Cardinal teams coming off of the holiday break.

“Overall, everyone bowled very well after the long winter break and only getting one practice in this week due to the cold winter weather we have had,” said Brett Jacobs, Newton head coach.

Payton Cox rolled a 422 series to lead the Cardinal boys. Cox opened with a 231 game. Fellow senior Alex Bare had a 230 for his first game and finished with a 394 series. Junior Shea Carre bowled a 366 with games of 227 and 139.

Sophomore Nick VerSteeg had a 342 (189-153) and freshman Shaiden Simmons had a 310 (172-138). Reid Miller, a sophomore, finished with a 263 (102-161). Following the individual games, the Cardinals led the Indians 1,834-1,766.

In the Baker games, Newton’s boys had back-to-back 200 games. Their Baker game scores were 193-202-201-166-142 for a 904 total.

Junior Madison Humphrey and senior Erica Bailey paced the Newton girls. Humphrey began throwing a 182 and finished with a 205 game for a team-high 387. Bailey rolled a 358 series with games of 164 and 194.

Senior Courtney Tabor bowled a 265 (127-138). Freshman Alyssa White had a 263 (136-127) and junior Mariah Gonzales had a 262 (133-129). Freshman Kaytie Hughes finished with a 244 (103-141).

Newton’s girls were up 1,535-1,407 over Clarke heading into the Baker games. The Cardinals girls rolled Baker games of 179-138-164-182-112 for a 775 total.

A combined junior varsity team for Newton defeated Clarke, 1.802-1,729. Lizzy Coyle led Newton with a 272 followed by Hayley Sinclair at 250, Kayla Sopher at 249, Tayler Hernandez at 242, Ali Cox at 208 and Treyton Ham with a 200.

In a boys’ junior varsity match, Clarke beat Newton 1,978-1,825. Newton’s top score was turned in by Joe Malsom at 311. Zion Dickey had a 267 followed by Sam Supino at 264, Michael Hodnett at 240 and Austin Johansen at 212.

Newton hosts Norwalk Saturday in a Little Hawkeye Conference dual at Newton’s Cardinal Lanes. Competition begins at 9 a.m.
