PCM finishes Solon Duals with win

SOLON — Prairie City-Monroe’s wrestling team salvaged a long day at the Solon Duals on Saturday with a win in its final match of the day.

The Mustangs lost all three of their pool matches and dropped their first dual in the consolation bracket to Keokuk but managed to finish the tournament with a 42-36 victory over Davenport Central.

Earlier in the day, PCM opened the tournament with a 53-25 loss to Interstate 35 then lost its next two Pool B matches to Solon (72-6) and Muscatine (46-33).

Senior Ron Marshall went 5-0 at 170 pounds with three pins and two forfeit wins and Xavier Miller was 4-1.

Tristan Clark, ranked No. 5 at Class 2A 126, dropped his first two matches of the season and is now 20-2 on the year.

Marshall improved to 12-2 on the year and Miller is now 16-2 at 120.

Against I-35, PCM got a pin from heavyweight Trent Malone and James Maggard (145), a major-decision win from Miller, a decision by Clark and a Marshall forfeit.

The only win for the Mustangs in the loss to Solon was a pin from Marshall.

Miller dropped his second bout of the season following an 8-5 loss and Clark suffered his first defeat, losing 1-0 to 2A No. 7 Louis Gnida.

PCM’s 33 points in the loss to Muscatine included pins from Clark, Marshall and Jaret Maggard, forfeit wins from Skyler Koder and Miller and Leevi Telfer won by a 4-2 decision.

In the consolation bracket opener against Keokuk, the Mustangs got forfeit wins from Marshall, Jakeb Fenton and Caleb Peter, a 4-0 win from Miller and a win by fall from James Maggard.

The victory over Davenport Central featured pins by James Maggard and Marshall, forfeit wins from Malone, Peter and Clark and wins by decision from Jaret Maggard and Miller.

James Maggard won all three of his matches Saturday by fall.

Cedar Rapids Prairie won the tournament with a 5-0 record.

It defeated Solon (4-1) in the championship match, while Dallas Center-Grimes was third at 3-2 and Keokuk also went 3-2.

Muscatine and I-35 finished the day 2-3.

The Mustangs hope to carry the momentum gained from the win over Davenport Central into Thursday night when they host a triangular in Monroe.

PCM will take on Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference rival Collins-Maxwell-Baxter and non-conference opponent Pleasantville beginning at 6 p.m.

The Mustangs also host their annual tournament in Monroe on Saturday. Action kicks off from PCM High School at 9 a.m.
