Patience pays off for Hawk boys in SICL win over HLV

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s boys stayed composed during a frustrating first half Tuesday as visiting HLV’s Warriors took the air out of the ball, so to speak.

“I thought tonight was a good learning experience for our guys. HLV tried to hold the ball on us at the start of the game, so we had to make some adjustments on the fly,” said Nick Harthoorn, Lynnville-Sully head coach after the Hawks claimed a 55-32 win at home.

“We were able to wear down some of their guards with our defensive pressure. We also played a little sharper offensively in the second half.”

Lynnville-Sully was up 8-6 after one quarter and led 25-12 at halftime. The Hawks broke free in the third quarter on a 20-7 run.

Kyle Van Dyke finished with 18 points to top the scoring for Lynnville-Sully. Jake Brand fired in 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers. Brand also dished out three assists while Caleb James had four assists, three steals and five points.

Lynnville-Sully shot 40 percent, 23-of-57, from the field. The Hawks downed 4-of 8 free throw attempts.

Ben Trettin controlled six of the team’s 25 rebounds and scored seven points. Baker Zegers had four steals and three points. Tyler Van Zante tossed in five points.

Tanner Strudthoff paced the Warriors with 11 points. HLV made 10 field goals — one was a 3-pointer — and cashed in on 11-of-17 free throws.

Lynnville-Sully improved to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in South Iowa Cedar League play. The Hawks conclude the first semester of play Friday at home in a SICL game against Sigourney.

On Saturday, Lynnville-Sully’s junior varsity beat Pella Christian, 72-25 led by Canyon Kuhlmann’s eight points, four rebounds and five steals.

The Hawk freshman boys defeated Pella Christian, 41-30. Elijah Collins scored 15 points and Jesse Van Wyk had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Van Wyk also blocked four shots and had four steals.
