CMB sweeps South Hamilton

BAXTER — Freshman Brianda Bane recorded her fourth double-double of the season and had career-highs in both points and rebounds to help the Collins-Maxwell/Baxter girls’ basketball team get into the win column Tuesday.

Bane finished with 23 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks and the Raiders tallied a season-high in points during a 51-31 victory over South Hamilton in Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference play.

The win was the first of the season for the Raiders and it ended an eight-game losing streak.

CMB led by a single point after the first quarter but went into halftime up nine following a 17-9 advantage in the second. The home team extended the lead in both the third and fourth quarters and went on to win by 20.

Carter Larson scored a season-high 12 points and also grabbed eight rebounds, while Lexi Breon added eight points, seven rebounds and six assists. Bridget Hurley also pulled down 11 rebounds, while Mackenzie Schmitz chipped in six boards and four assists.

The Raiders (1-8, 1-5) dominated the boards in the win and made 23-of-54 from the floor. Bane’s only three misses of the night came from outside as she was 11-for-14 from the floor and eight of her 15 rebounds came at the offensive end.

South Hamilton (1-5, 1-5) dropped below CMB in the HOIAC standings after the loss.

BAXTER — The Raider boys seem to be finding their stride after a second-straight victory on Tuesday night.

CMB got off to a fast start for the second consecutive game and never looked back in winning in Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference play for the first time this year.

Brady Stover buried three 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 15 points, while Bryce Kemp added 14 points and nine rebounds. Joey Nissen hit double-figures for the third straight contest with 10 and Seth Balke finished with nine points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

The Raiders did not score more than 51 points in the first five games this season but has now put in at least 60 in two straight and both resulted in easy wins.

CMB led 17-2 after one and used a 19-0 run during the first half to take complete control of the defending conference champions. It was 36-12 at halftime and 51-17 after three quarters.

The Raiders came into the last Friday night’s game against Prairie City-Monroe averaging just one 3-point make per game but has drained 16 in the past three games.

CMB (2-5, 1-4) also made nine more free throws than South Hamilton (1-4, 1-4) and out-rebounded the Hawks 31-20.

Both CMB squads head to Colfax-Mingo on Friday for another HOIAC matchup. The varsity doubleheader kicks off at 6 p.m.
