Two of the most intense matches of the night came at the end of Tuesday’s home double dual for Newton High’s Cardinals.
Newton was in the position to capture its second team win of the night. The Cardinals were up on the Carlisle Wildcats, 40-19 with three matches remaining in the non-conference dual.
Newton had notched a Little Hawkeye Conference dual win over Pella, 60-18, to go 1-0 in conference action for the season. Carlisle defeated Pella, 42-29.
Newton hosts Norwalk in LHC Thursday. Action begins at 6:30 p.m.
In the 195-pound match with Carlisle, Newton’s Duncan Lee was locked in a battle with Andrew Burnett. After a scoreless first period, Lee got an escape but Burnett claimed a 2-1 lead on a takedown. Lee tied the match up with another escape.
In a 2-2 match with two minutes left, Lee was in the controlling position and turned Burnett to his back but not for enough time. Still tied, Burnett came up with a reversal with 10 seconds left in the match to take a 4-2 decision.
Jordan Henning of Newton faced Jake Henkelman of Carlisle in the 220-pound match. Henning trailed 5-2 when he made a move for a reversal and had Henkelman on his back, but couldn’t score points.
Henkelman turned it all around with a reversal. He put Henning on his back and got the fall with two seconds remaining in the first period.
Newton was still going to win the dual, leading 40-28. Newton’s Caden Manning was pinned by Carlisle’s Anthony Hanson in 45 seconds of their 285-pound match to end the night of action. Newton won 40-34.
“Our guys wrestled pretty well tonight. We had some young guys step in and do well in their first varsity experience,” said Andy Swedenhjelm, Newton head coach. “Josh Miravalles (132) went out there and fought real hard against Carlisle.
“We look at little things that matter big time in matches. Josh being beat by a major decision and not pinned in a close meet is important. Same with Payton Patterson, fighting and keeping it a decision and not giving up a pin. That all matters in the team score. The guys are upset that they lost, but their effort helped get us to a win today.”
The Cardinals were without senior J.T. Thongvanh, who has been sidelined since the end of the Cardinal Classic on Dec. 6 with a shoulder injury. Thongvanh is Newton’s top 170-pound wrestler. Swedenhjelm said Thongvanh hasn’t been cleared to wrestle yet.
Newton opened with the LHC dual with Pella’s Little Dutch. Henning and Manning put the Cardinals up 12-0 to start with forfeit wins at 220 and 285. Hunter Versteegh at 113, Alex Bentley at 120 and Parker Schuster at 126 nailed down victories on the mat with first-period pins.
The Cardinals were up 30-0 when Pella’s Chase Petty pinned Miravalles in the 132-pound match to put the Little Dutch on the scoreboard. Dakota Dawson racked up six points for the team via a forfeit at 138, then Bryce Tish pinned Jacob Diehl in 2:56 for the win at 152.
Brett Wolf followed suit with a pin of Austin Bragg at 152. Brady Smith won the 160-pound match with a pin right at the end of the second period of his match. Pella won the next two matches — 170 and 182— and Lee got a forfeit win at 195.
“We treat it just like any other match,” Wolf said. “You got a win. It was a conference meet and we wanted to get it done at home. We’ll see them again at the conference tournament. We still have work to do. I have things I need to improve on and I’m working in the wrestling room with the coaches.”
Newton was down 6-0 to Carlisle because of a forfeit at 106. Versteegh evened the score with a pin of Kaleb Reed at 113. Bentley quickly put the Cardinals on top to stay with a pin of Jordan Watts in 24 seconds at 120 pounds.
Schuster at 126 and Dawson at 128 won by forfeits for Newton. In between, Miravalles, a freshman, fought off all of Kenny McCaughey’s attempts to get a fall in the 132-pound match. McCaughey won 12-4 to give Carlisle four points in the team scoring.
Tish built up a 10-2 lead before pinning Kyle Rees with four seconds left in the second period of the 145-pound bout. Wolf put Caleb Davis on his back for a fall in 34 seconds at 152 to push Newton’s team lead to 36-10.
“It was a really good night to wrestle, I guess,” Tish said following the competition. “We had a good warm-up today. It’s great to get the conference win over Pella, after they beat us twice in football. Now, we just need to keep working on hitting our (takedown) shots and work on up-tempo wrestling.”
Smith did everything but pin Carlisle’s Kallen Glawe for a 17-5 win for Newton at 160. Damon Piatt pinned Newton’s Harley Walker. Patterson and Carlisle’s Travis Johnson had a tough match at 160 with Johnson winning 4-1.
That made it Newton 40, Carlisle 19, setting up the final three matches of the dual.
Now, the Cardinals turn their attention to Norwalk, which comes to the NHS gymnasium Thursday in Little Hawkeye Conference action.
“These guys are competitors and wrestle hard no matter who we’re going up against. It’s always a little boost when you wrestle inside the conference,” Swedenhjelm said. “We set a good tone at the beginning of the year. Norwalk is a good team and Thursday’s dual is going to be a battle and a lot of fun.
“It’s a conference dual and the crowd gets into it and the kids get into it. Norwalk is well coached. We’re expecting a tough, hard-fought match with Norwalk.”
