Newton wrestlers compete at SEP JV Duals

PLEASANT HILL — Newton High’s junior varsity wrestlers got plenty of mat time Saturday competing at the Southeast Polk JV Duals. Newton lost five duals, but got much needed matches for the younger Cardinal wrestlers.

Jonathan Lawton went 4-0 at 113 pounds for the Cardinals and Aren Sorenson was 1-0 at that weight. Harley Walker posted a 3-2 mark wrestling at 170, plus had a win at 152 pounds.

Tanner Petro had a 2-3 day at 145 pounds while Caleb Kite was 2-0 at 220 pounds and 0-1 at 285 pounds. Lucas Montgomery got a forfeit win at 285 for Newton. Jacob Smith also had a won at 285 and was 1-2 at 220.

Jace Lukefahr wrestled at 285 pounds with one win and one loss and he had a victory at 195 pounds. Logan Wolfe had a 1-4 run at 138 for Newton. Josh Miravalles lost his one 106-pound match of the day and went 0-4 at 132 pounds.

At 152, Tristin Langmaid went 1-1 while Justice Borger and Blayden Rhone each notched a win at that weight. Rhone was 0-2 at 160 and Reed Shepard went 0-3 at 160.

Newton lost to Dowling Catholic, 54-30, as Dowling Catholic had three wins by forfeit. Southeast Polk Gold had three forfeit wins as it got past Newton 42-25. Newton and Urbandale were matched up well, but Urbandale took the dual, 34-28, and had two forfeit wins.

Cedar Rapids Jefferson notched five wins by forfeit on its way to a 63-16 win over the Cardinals. Atlantic had four forfeit wins to help it get past Newton, 48-21.

Newton’s junior varsity wrestles at home Tuesday against Carlisle and Pella, then at home against Thursday against Norwalk. It concludes pre-Christmas action Saturday at a tournament hosted by North Polk.
