MARSHALLTOWN — Taking a break from the normal swim meet style, Newton High’s Cardinal boys jumped into a different type of competition Saturday. Only four-man and two-man relay races are featured at the Marshalltown Bobcat Invitational swim meet.

“It was a good meet for us. We had some great swims and came close to some records,” said Dave Hook, Newton head coach.

“We put together relays looking to go after a couple of the Bobcat Invitational records. We did break one, but Valley did too. We came very, very close on another one.”

Jake Lensing and Isaak Webb combined to win the 200-yard breaststroke relay in 2 minutes, 4.48 seconds. That was just off the meet record of 2:04.41.

The same duo placed second in the 100 freestyle relay in 45.05 seconds, which was under the meet record. West Des Moines Valley’s two-man relay team won the race in record time of 44.59 seconds. The old meet mark was 45.65 seconds set in 2006.

Valley won the varsity team title with 88 points. Newton was fourth with 52 points, just six points out of second place. Cedar Rapids Kennedy placed second with 58 points followed by Marshalltown in third at 54. Waterloo East was fifth with 23 points and Atlantic was sixth at 20 points.

“The guys really enjoy the relay-style meets. It’s a nice change for everybody,” Hook said. “Guys get to swim a couple different events.”

Jacob Knoll and Reese Rosenquist combined for fourth place in the varsity 200 butterfly relay with a time of 2:22.98. Logan Heisdorffer and Zach Theis were fourth in the 200 freestyle in 2:06.08.

Lucas Warren and Aaron King claimed fourth in the 200 backstroke relay in 2:03.30. King combined with Jeffrey Fitzgerald to place fourth in the 1,000 freestyle in 12:05.04.

Fitzgerald joined Paul Maharry in the 400 medley relay for fifth in 5:12.08. Theis and Rosenquist placed fifth in the 400 freestyle with a time of 4:39.93.

“Logan and Zach did a nice job in the varsity 200 freestyle and Jacob Knoll and Reese had a good showing in their butterfly varsity relay,” Hook said.

Newton took second in two of the three four-man relay races at the meet.

Webb, Lensing, King and Warner began the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay in 1:42.72. The same foursome posted a second-place time of 1:31.52 in the 200 freestyle. Both were season-best times for the Cardinals.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Fitzgerald, Maharry, Rosenquist and Warren took fifth in 3:52.98.

In the junior varsity races, Newton recorded five fourth-place finishes and one fifth place.

The 100 freestyle duo of Grant Hamand and Chet Adams placed fourth in 1:11.53 and Knoll and Heisdorffer were fourth in the 200 backstroke in 2:27.01. Heisdorffer and Karl Recknagel were fifth in the 400 freestyle in 5:06.45.

Theis, Maharry, Knoll and Adams combined for fourth in the 200 medley in 2:14.07. In the 200 freestyle it was Rosenquist, Hamand, Recknagel and Fitzgerald taking fourth in 1:59.79. The foursome of Theis, Knoll, Recknagel and Heisdorffer was fourth in the 400 freestyle in 4:29.91.

It was the last meet before Christmas break for the Cardinal swim team. Newton hits the competitive waters again Jan. 10 at the Waterloo Invitational.

“At this point in the season, we’re right where we need to be with good times being swam by all of the guys,” Hook said. “Our relays are doing very well with the medley and 200 freestyle in the top 10 in the state. We’re looking forward to have good Christmas break practices and get back to competition in January.”

Newton’s 200 medley relay sits sixth in the state and the 200 freestyle relay is 10th. The 400 freestyle relay is 14th.

Individually, Webb is sixth in the state’s 200 individual medley and eighth in the 100 butterfly. Lensing has the 11th-fastest 100 breaststroke.
