Lynnville-Sully boys hold off BGM; girls thump the Bears

SULLY — In the middle quarters — second and third — Lynnville-Sully’s boys edged out to a lead over visiting BGM Tuesday. The Hawks were able to hold off the Bears down the stretch for a 53-50 win in South Iowa Cedar League action.

“The guys gave great effort on defense. We knew this would be a tough game and the guys responded,” said Nick Harthoorn, Lynnville-Sully boys’ head coach.

“We did a better job of taking care of the basketball tonight. Hopefully we can keep making strides in practice each day.”

Lynnville-Sully’s girls overpowered BGM in the early game Tuesday night. The Hawk girls were up 25-18 at halftime, then went on a 20-8 run in the third quarter, securing a 60-37 win.

“I was very happy with how the girls played tonight, everyone contributed tonight game,” said Jerry Hulsing, Lynnville-Sully girls’ head coach.

“When we were aggressive on both ends of the floor we had good things happen it was good to see the girls respond to the run BGM had in the third cutting our lead to three points and respond with a 16-0 run to finish the third quarter.”

In the boys’ game, Lynnville-Sully and BGM were tied 10-all after one quarter. The Hawks outscored the Bears 16-14 in the second period and 16-12 in the third. The Bears made a run, 14-11, in the fourth, but it was not enough to catch the Hawks.

Jake Brand led the Lynnville-Sully boys with 18 points and six assists. Ben Trettin tossed in 13 points and made three steals.

Kyle Van Dyke added 12 points, pulled down eight rebounds, blocked three shots and had three steals. Sage Ehresman scored eight points. Baker Zegers had four points and six rebounds. Caleb James made three steals and had one point.

Tanner Jansen paced the Bears with 19 points. Kaiden Fiebelkorn scored 13 points.

Lysandra James recorded another double-double in helping guide the Class 1A 13th-ranked Hawk girls to victory. James scored 21 points and controlled 12 rebounds.

Marissa Vos also had 21 points for the Hawks. Madison Ramusson scored nine points and made threee steals. Kasiah Ehresman and Brenna Lanser had four ponts apiece. Haley James had one point.

The Lynnville-Sully girls improved to 6-0 on the season and 5-0 in SICL play. Lynnville-Sully’s boys moved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in confereence action.

The Hawk teams host Belle Plaine in SICL play Friday.
