There’s no place like home.

Newton High’s bowling teams had their first home dual meet Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals had a strong outing on the alleys at Cardinal Lanes.

The Cardinal girls powered past visiting Marshalltown by 329 pins. They held a 1,635-1,392 advantage following the individual games.

Newton’s girls threw strong Baker games with a total of 741. The Bobcats turned in a 654 in the Baker games.

The Cardinal girls won the dual with a 2,375 pin count. Marshalltown finished at 2,046.

“The girls dominated the match. They remained focused and consistently threw great shots,” said Brett Jacobs, Newton bowling head coach.

Senior Erica Bailey opened the competition with a 212 game and finished with a team-high 406 series. Junior Madison Humphrey had games of 178 and 196 for a 374.

Mariah Gonzales threw a 292 series (169-123). Freshman Kaytie Hughes posted a 289 (162-127). Senior Melanie Stice had a 273 (135-138) and freshman Alyssa White had a 270 (123-147).

“The boys were down 93 pins going into the Baker games (1,742-1,649)” Jacobs said. “They made up 28 points throughout the Baker games but lost a close one to a tough Marshalltown team by 65 pins.”

Marshalltown won the match, 2,590-2,525.

Seniors Payton Cox and Alex Bare led the Cardinal boys. Cox threw back-to-back 200-plus games (214-208) for a team-high 422.

Bare began with a 161 game then tossed a 189 to finish at 350. Junior Shea Carre rolled two even games — 163 and 162 — for a 325.

Freshman Reece Thurman bowled 165 in his second game to end up at 284. Sophomore Reid Miller and freshman Shaiden Simmons each had a 268. Miller had games of 144 and 124 and Simmons rolled a 146 and 122.

“Reid did very well in the Baker games, scoring nine strikes of his 10 shots during those games,” Jacobs said.

In dual action, the Newton girls are 1-0 and the boys are 0-1. They both were coming off team championships at the season-opening event, the Knoxville Invitational.

Newton’s bowlers are back in action Saturday. The Cardinals head to Pella Christian for a league dual.

They are back at home Monday when Des Moines North comes to the Cardinal Lanes.
