First bilingual sheriff’s deputy hired in Jasper County

Marcos Gonzales was approved for hire as a deputy in the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office at the Jasper County Board of Supervisors meeting Tuesday. Gonzales is fluent in Spanish and will be the first bilingual deputy on the force.

“That will be a big advantage,” board member Joe Brock said.

Currently completing training, Gonzales’ start date is Dec. 15 at a $23.83 per hour pay rate. The hire came in part because of the requirement for a deputy to be stationed at the Jasper County Courthouse on a full time basis.

After the conclusion of the meeting, the board approved the renewal of the Lynnville-Sully Physical Plant and Equipment Levy which was approved by voters during a special election on Dec. 2. A total of 113 votes were cast with 101 in favor and 12 opposed. The levy, which is renewed in 10 year cycles, takes 67 cent per $1,000 of assessed value of taxable property within the school district. The new cycle will begin July 1, 2015 and last until June 30, 2025. The Lynnville-Sully Community School District encompasses Jasper, Poweshiek and Mahaska counties.
