Hawk boys go 1-1

SULLY — Overcoming some adversity early in the season, Lynnville-Sully’s boys left Friday night’s 47-29 South Iowa Cedar League loss to visiting Montezuma in the pass and moved on. They had to.

The Hawks were on the road in a non-conference matchup with Eddyville-Blakesburg Saturday. They posted a 72-48 victory over the Rockets to improve to 2-1 on the season.

“It was great to see how the boys responded to a tough game the night before,” said Nick Harthoorn, Lynnville-Sully boys’ head coach. “Our hustle and attention to detail helped create a lot of turnovers and easy baskets. It was good see the boys knock down some shots.”

The Hawks came up with 15 steals and 15 assists in their win at Eddyville. Lynnville-Sully rolled to a 19-5 lead in the first quarter and held a 37-14 halftime lead. The Hawks outscored the Rockets 35-34 in the second half.

Lynnville-Sully shot 53 percent, 28-of-53, from the field and sank 9-of-14 free throw attempts. Eddyville-Blakesburg went 18-of-56 for 32 percent from the field. The Rocket downed 5-of-11 charity tosses.

Ben Trettin knocked down 20 points for the Hawks. He had eight steals and five assists. Kyle Van Dyke added 15 points and pulled five rebounds. Jesse Van Wyk, Jake Brand and John Trettin each had seven points.

Sage Ehresman and Caleb James scored six point each while Tyler Van Zante and Baker Zegers tossed in two points apiece. J. Trettin claimed six of the team’s 31 rebounds and Van Wyk had five. James handed out three assists.

Jevin Jensen led the Rockets with 15 points.

At home Friday in conference play, the Hawks succumbed to the quick-start shooting of the Montezuma Braves. Montezuma fired out to a 19-8 lead in the first quarter and did much the same in the third period against the Hawks.

The Braves led the Hawks 25-16 at the break, but went on a 17-4 run over the next eight minutes.

“Montezuma came out shot the basketball well in the first quarter. We did a better job defensively from that point on. We turned the ball over too much and were never able to find a rhythm offensively,” Harthoorn said.

The Hawks shot just 21 percent, 11-of-52, from the field Friday night. Montezuma shot 41 percent, 16-of-39, which included eight 3-pointers.

Van Zante led the Hawks with nine points and Brand added six points and had three assists. Van Wyk scored four points and two steals. Van Dyke pulled 12 rebounds and had four points.

Scoring two points each were B. Trettin, Ehresman and Zegers. Zegers had eight rebounds.

Montezuma’s Brody McKeag hit four 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 17 points. Jake Halsey had three 3-pointers as he scored 15 points. Logan Price tossed in 11 points.

Lynnville-Sully, which is 1-1 in SICL play, host conference rival BGM Tuesday at Sully.
