Don “Smiley” Snodgrass, 84, of Sully, died Dec. 6, 2014, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center in Grinnell. A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor Dave Rex, Metz Community Church in Newton, officiating. Vocalists will be Michael Mitchell and Allison Murphy. Pallbearers will be B.J. and Matt McCormick, Michael Mitchell, Ryan Moes, and Adam, Donovan, Jamie, Joel, Kirk, Scott and Travis Snodgrass. Burial will be in the Sully Cemetery in Sully. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Donovan C. Snodgrass Memorial Fund through Grinnell State Bank.

Don was born Dec. 10, 1929, on the family farm in Jasper County. He was raised in the area and received his education in the Newton School District. On April 14, 1949, he was united in marriage with Doris Rohlfing in Malcom. The couple lived in Grinnell for several years and then moved to Sully in the early 1960s. He had been a resident of the Mayflower Community since July of this year. For many years, Don was an over-the-road truck driver which took him throughout the United States. He later drove locally for Monroe Feed Center and while employed there he was given the nickname “Smiley.” He retired in the early 1980s. Don enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities and sharing a cup of coffee with family and friends. He loved fishing, hunting, attending rodeos and raising exotic animals. He enjoyed going to auctions and antique hunting; he was an avid collector of glassware, knifes, coins and Aladdin lamps. He also enjoyed attending the Bar-None Cowboy Church in Newton.

Survivors include his wife, Doris of Sully; seven children, Dennis (Barbara) Snodgrass of Sully, Patti (Mark) McCormick of Del Ray Beach, Fla., Barb (Mike) Mitchell of Ankeny, Jim (Sandy) Snodgrass of Kellogg, Kathy (Dennis) Moes of Dandridge, Tenn., Don (Debbie) Snodgrass of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Steven (Chris) Snodgrass of Tucson, Ariz.; one brother, Ronnie Snodgrass of Grinnell; one sister, Marceil Sieck of Grinnell; 23 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Clifford Snodgrass; two sisters, Joyce Johnson and Phyllis Snodgrass; one great-grandson, Bentley Snodgrass.
