Hawk girls take two over weekend

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully’s girls played back-to-back games over the weekend. The Class 1A 13th-ranked Hawks were up to the task.

Friday night at home, the Hawk girls dominated against Montezuma 61-47 to move to 4-0 in South Iowa Cedar League play. They turned around Saturday afternoon and traveled to Eddyville to take on the Class 2A 15th-ranked Eddyville-Blakesburg Rockets.

“The girls played a very good game today. It was our best effort of the season so far. I am really proud of them playing two good hard physical games back to back and working to get better each night,” said Jerry Hulsing, Hawks’ head coach following a 56-47 win over the Rockets.

Lynnville-Sully opened Saturday’s contest with a 16-4 run in the first quarter. The Rockets finally got under way, outscoring the Hawks 17-11 in the second period, but Lynnville-Sully held on for a 27-21 halftime lead.

The Hawks and Rockets played a back-and-forth second half. Lynnville-Sully was still up 41-36 after three periods and finished off the contest with a 15-11 scoring edge in the final eight minutes.

“I feel that we took steps in the right direction to make us a better defensive team. Our offense was balanced again, which makes us hard to defend. I thought the girls attacked when we should have and held up at the right times,” Hulsing said.

The Hawks continue to find ways to get to the free-throw line. They were 29-of-31 (71 percent) at the line Saturday after cashing in 21-of-35 free throw attempts in their win over Montezuma Friday night.

Pacing the Hawks against the Rockets was Brenna Lanser with 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Lynnville-Sully had 24 steals in the contest led by Kasiah Ehresman’s seven. Ehresman scored five points.

Lysandra had another double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, plus swiped the ball four times. Marissa Vos added 11 points. Madison Rasmusson scored eight points and had four steals. Shelby Davis tossed in three points and Jelissa Rozendaal added two points.

The Hawks had 34 rebounds, They shot 31 percent from the field, hitting 12-of-39 shots.

Karlie Taylor score 17 points and Rachel Maloy had 12 points for Eddyville-Blakesburg.

At home Friday, the Hawks established control with a 17-8 scoring edge in the first quarter to push past visiting Montezuma. Lynnville-Sully led 29-16 at halftime.

Vos had 21 points and 13 rebounds for the Hawks. James scored 11 points and had 14 rebounds. Rasmusson had 12 points and four assists.

Ehresman scored eight points and had four assists. Davis tossed in five points. Lanser and J. Rozendaal each had two points.

Montezuma got 11 points from Katie Maschmann and 10 points from Mackenize James.

The Lynnville-Sully junior varisty lost its first game of the season Friday, 44-29, to Montezuma then bounced back for a 31-25 win at Eddyville-Blakesburg. The Hawks rallied for 21 points in the fourth quarter for the win Saturday.

Against Montezuma, McKinley Conover fired in 19 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Lynnville-Sully junior varsity. In Ssturday’s win, J. Rozendaal had nine points and nine rebounds while Haley James and seven points and seven rebounds.
