Raider wrestlers begin season with narrow win

MAXWELL — The Collins-Maxwell/Baxter wrestling team went 4-5 in contested matches against Nevada during the season opener here Tuesday.

But the Raiders picked up a win over the Cubs thanks to forfeit wins in three of the first four weights. They jumped out to an 18-6 lead and got back-to-back pins from Beau Iske and Ethan Cozad to win 42-36.

Iske pinned Luke Ferguson with two seconds to go in the second period at 138 and then Cozad followed with a second-period fall of Cody Weier.

That gave the Raiders (1-0, 1-0) a 36-15 lead but it wouldn’t be until Logan Mitchell’s pin in the final match of the night that CMB could celebrate a season-opening win.

Nevada (0-1, 0-1) rallied for four straight wins at 152, 160, 170 and 182, but Mitchell’s pin over Logsdon Trice with six seconds to go in the first period sealed the deal for the Raiders.

The other contested victory for CMB came from Jake Hennick, who pinned Emilio Saldana in the second period of their match at 126.

Charles Robertson (220) and Archer McFadden (285) both took forfeits to open the dual and Tate Ewing made it 18-6 following another forfeit win at 113.

The Raiders will next wrestle in the Bondurant-Farrar Invitational on Saturday. Action begins at 9 a.m.
