Lynnville-Sully boys, girls dominate Tri-County

THORNBURG — Lynnville-Sully’s basketball teams had little trouble with their hosts Tuesday night. The Hawk girls and boys swept past the Tri-County Trojans in South Iowa Cedar League play.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls started off the night with a commanding 60-30 win over the Tri-County girls. The Hawk girls are 3-0 on the season.

Lynnville-Sully’s boys were just as dominating in their season opener against Tri-County. The Hawk boys powered past the Trojans 66-25.

“We were able to create some turnovers, which led to some easy baskets,” said Nick Harthoorn, Lynnville-Sully boys’ head coach. “I thought we played unselfishly on offense. It was good to see everyone get involved the first night out.”

The Hawk boys notched 19 assists as nine players scored for Lynnville-Sully. On the inside, junior forward Kyle Van Dyke did the damage with 19 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots. Senior guard Jake Brand contributed 12 points plus dished out five assists.

Lynnville-Sully’s boys were up 19-3 after one quarter and carried a 32-13 lead into halftime. They outscored Tri-County 34-14 in the second half.

The Hawks shot 50 percent, 30-of-60, overall from the field. They were 29-of-45 from two-point range, which is 64 percent. Lynnville-Sully went 6-of-12 at the free-throw line.

Senior guard Caleb James pulled down seven of the team’s 38 rebounds. Tyler Van Zante, a sophomore, had six rebounds. Senior guard Ben Trettin came up with five of the team’s 14 steals in the game.

Tri-County got a double-double from sophomore Jacob Bombel, who scored 12 points and grabbed 11 of the team’s 18 rebounds. The Trojans were 10-of-38 from the field overall and 3-of-6 on charity tosses.

Powered by four players scoring in double digits, Lynnville-Sully’s girls pushed past Tri-County. Kasiah Ehresman fired in 14 points to top the scoring list followed by Brenna Lanser with 12. Shelby Davis and Marissa Vos each added 10 points.

The Hawk girls busted loose for a 13-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Trojan girls made a run, outscoring the Hawks 14-13 in the second period to narrow the margin. Lynnville-Sully took a 26-20 lead into the break.

No such rally by the Trojans in the second half. Lynnville-Sully clamped down defensively, giving up just 10 points in the final two quarters. The Hawk girls scored 15 points in the third period and 19 in the fourth.

“It is nice to have good balance in our scoring. It is making us better on the offensive end, when we have different girls step up for us,” said Jerry Hulsing, Lynnville-Sully girls’ head coach. “At times we did a good job of pushing the ball. We still have some room to grow on the defensive end in our communication.”

The Lynnville-Sully girls shot just 30 percent, 18-of-60, from the field. They drive to the basket which gets them to the free-throw line. At Tri-County, the Hawks cashed in on 18-of-33 free throw attempts while their hosts were 4-of-10 at the line.

Lynnville-Sully held a 53-37 rebounding edge over the Trojans. Lanser and Vos each had a double-double as they pulled down 15 rebounds and 11 rebounds, respectively, to go with their double-figure scoring. James claimed 12 rebounds. Davis had three steals and four assists.

Ginny Schmidt and Katilyn Little each scored seven points to lead Tri-County.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls host Montezuma in SICL play Friday night at Sully. On Saturday, the Lynnville-Sully girls and boys step out of league play to take on Eddyville-Blakesburg.
