Mustangs get in win column after rout of Greene County

MONROE — After a slow start, the Class 3A No. 12 Prairie City-Monroe girls’ basketball team blitzed Greene County for 24 points in the second quarter and then outscored its visitors 34-16 in the second half during a 68-35 win here Tuesday.

PCM senior Rachel Freland recorded her first double-double of the year with 24 points and 11 steals, while sophomore Kayla Jennings scored a season-high 14 points and recorded eight steals. The Mustangs had 26 steals in the game and committed just 13 fouls a few days after struggling with foul trouble in the season opener against Knoxville.

PCM (1-1, 1-0) was down 11-10 after one frame but jumped in front with a 24-8 advantage in the second. Both the third and fourth quarters ended 17-8 in PCM’s favor.

Sophomore Rachel Stafford had six points and eight boards for the Mustangs, who also got six points, six rebounds and three assists from senior Courtney VanHouweling and five assists and four steals from sophomore Jayci Vos.

Freland, who signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division II softball at Rogers State University earlier in the day, also pulled down four rebounds.

The Mustangs’ small forward was 10-of-18 from the floor and buried four 3-pointers.

The Mustangs will play their third straight home game when they host Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference rival South Hamilton on Tuesday. It’s the first boy-girl doubleheader of the season.

Greene County next plays at Colfax-Mingo (0-2, 0-1) on Tuesday.
