C-M girls start slow in road loss to Blue Devils

MARTENSDALE — Martensdale-St. Marys jumped out to a 15-3 lead after one quarter Friday night and the Colfax-Mingo girls’ basketball team had a tough time catching up during a 64-33 loss in the season opener here.

Sophomore Alivia Haley led Colfax-Mingo with 11 points and freshman McKeely Tjaden added seven in her first varsity game, but the Tigerhawks (0-1) hit just 11-of-40 from the floor and scored single digits in three of the four quarters.

The host Blue Devils outscored Colfax-Mingo 33-15 in the second half and got 15 points and eight rebounds from sophomore Kaci Sherwood. Kylah Schumacher and Nicole Schutt both scored 11 points as well.

The Tigerhawks also got six points from Dakota Hostetter and Sara Lahart and Hostetter also grabbed a team-high five boards.

Colfax-Mingo was out-rebounded 32-17 though.

Colfax-Mingo will try to get its first win Tuesday against Nevada. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Colfax.
