• Benjamin M. Nelson, 23, of Newton, is charged with operating while under the influence
after authorities pulled him over for speeding in the 700 block of East 12th Street South at 10:40 p.m. Nov. 14. Officers observed Nelson had a strong smell of alcohol as well as slurred speech and bloodshot, watery eyes. He admitted to drinking three or four shots that evening. He had a BAC of .124. He was cited and released to appear.
• John A. Morgan, 26, of Newton, is charged with operating while under the influence after authorities called to the 1300 block of Glenway Drive at 2:10 p.m. Nov. 10. Officers received a report of a person sleeping in a vehicle. Officers found Morgan asleep in the vehicle. He gave several indicators of substance use and failed two sobriety maneuvers. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
• Sandra J. Cupples, 58, of Newton, is charged with fifth-degree theft after authorities were called to Hy-Vee at 10:24 a.m. Monday. Officers spoke with an employee who said Cupples selected several items from the meat counter and put them in her purse. She then proceeded to walk out of the store. Employees stopped her and she admitted to taking the items. The total value was $176.87. She was cited and released to appear.
