Small Business Saturday gets boost with ‘Shop Small’ promotion

With the tradition of Black Friday shopping strong at large retail stores, Small Business Saturday formed to shine a light on those smaller, one-of-a-kind hometown businesses.

Many downtown Newton businesses are opening the doors Saturday with specials on hand for the customers looking for a more intimate shopping experience.

“It has been really good, good day,” said Bonnie Terpstra, owner of The Farmer’s Wife.

Silverado Jewelry Owner Stephanie Moran said she will be having a Saturday special of $10 stocking stuffers and 20 percent off the entire store as well as cider cookies available. She said she had a great turn out last year and was happy with her sales.

On the other side of the square, Mattingly Music & Books is planning a 20 percent off sale on its hardback books as well as all guitars in the shop.

Terpstra, along with several other business will be taking part in Newton Main Street’s “Shop Small” holiday promotion. It features cash coupons from participating downtown retailers on purchases made between Nov. 27 and Dec. 7, which can then be redeemed at the same store between Dec. 8 and Dec. 24. The shops have two options for coupons. First, for every $25 spent, a customer will receive a $5 cash coupon or for every $10 spend, a customer receives $1 cash coupon.

“I think that having the promotion will be even better in helping people to remember to shop small,” Terpstra said.

Also featured on Saturday is a pop-up art show and sale hosted by the Centre for the Arts and Artists to be held from 12 to 4 p.m. at the former Pappy’s Antique Mall, 103 First Ave. W. More than 20 artists will display their work and have items for sale. There will also be a children’s activity of making holiday ornaments, as a fundraiser for the Centre and baked goods for sale.

“Our goal is to get people downtown and showcase the unique gift options offered by downtown retailers and area artists,” Andrew Bassman, executive director of the Newton Main Street Partnership said. “The combination presents a distinct holiday shopping experience unlike what is available any place else.”
