Hawk football players earn Class A District 7 honors

SULLY — Four losses in their first four games of the season could have discouraged Lynnville-Sully’s football players. The Hawks kept moving forward to finish 4-5 on the season. They came within a tiebreaker of reaching the Class A playoffs.

The Hawks’ play in Class A District 7 did not go unnoticed by district coaches when the 2014 Class A District 7 All-District football honors were announced.

Senior linebacker Noah Zylstra was named the District 7 defensive MVP, earning first-team district honors. He had 68 unassisted tackles and 15.5 assisted tackles for the Hawks. He tied for first in District 7 for tackles for loss with 17.

Zylstra finished 17th in tackles in Class A. He had five quarterback sacks.

Joining Zylstra on the Class A District 7 first team were senior offensive lineman Blake Wehrle and junior running back Sage Ehresman. Juniors Kyle Van Dyke as an offensive lineman and junior defensive end Ross Van Wyk were named to the second team.

Senior Caleb James as linebacker and junior Kobe Fisk as defensive back earned District 7 honorable mention.

Ehresman led Lynnville-Sully in rushing with 1,047 yards on 127 carries for a 8.2-yard per carry average. He was sixth on the district rushing list and fourth in rushing touchdowns with 14. He scored 110 points, which included four two-point conversions. He had two receptions for 51 yards and one touchdown.

On defense, Ehresman was second on the team in tackles with 63 solo stops and eight assisted tackles. He had 12 tackles for loss and one quarterback sack.

Wehrle was important to the Hawk offensive line, but he also had 19 solo tackles and 4.5 assisted tackles. Wehrle had 10 tackles for loss and a quarterback sack.

Van Dyke earned second-team honors as an offensive lineman for Lynnville-Sully. Van Dyke racked up 18 unassisted tackles and nine assisted tackles for the Hawk defense, plus had nine tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks.

Van Wyk was second-team defense as defensive end with 14 solo stops, one assisted tackle, five tackles for loss and three quarterback sacks. He also rushed for 275 yards on 73 carries for one touchdown and scored 16 points.

James recorded 18 solo tackles and 5.5 assisted tackles as a linebacker for Lynnville-Sully and had three tackles for loss. The senior rushed for 57 yards on 13 carries and scored one touchdown.

Fisk had two interceptions as a defensive back for the Hawks. He also had 17 unassisted tackles and 3.5 assisted tackles. Fisk moved into the starting quarterback spot for the Hawks on offense, completed 29-of-73 attempts for 309 yards, throwing one touchdown and seven interceptions. He had 54 yards on 46 carries and scored two touchdowns on the ground.
