Four new properties up for the D&D program

Four more properties are on the agenda to be purchased or obtained by the city through the D&D program at the city council meeting Monday. Properties at 326 E. 11th St. N. and 425 First Ave. W. are up for purchase while 517 S. Second Ave. W. and 403 N. Fourth Ave. E. are abandoned buildings to be acquired by the city.

The low conditioned building at 326 E. 11th St. N. has a purchase price of $4,000 while the 425 First Ave. W. property has a price of $50,000. The owner of the property at 425 First Ave. W. brought the proposal to the city and after researching the property, the city found that acquiring the property could provide flexibility to expand parking and meet the evolving needs of the City Hall complex.

The abandoned buildings at 517 S. Second Ave. W. and 403 N. Fourth Ave. E. would be titled to the city through Iowa Code 657A.10A that allow cities to petition the courts for title of abandoned properties. The city said the process provides a more permanent solution in dealing with, and cleaning up properties heavily encumbered with various liens. Upon acceptance of the title and conclusion of the 30 day appeal period, outstanding property taxes will be the responsibility of the city.

In other business:

• Public Works will give a report.

• The council will consider new bathrooms at Aurora Park.

• A public hearing will take place on a resolution awarding a contract for the 2014 Sanitary Sewer Lining Project.
