Dennis L. McCombs, 75, of Newton, formerly of Melrose, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, at his daughter’s home in Newton. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1 at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to Skiff Hospice may be left at the funeral home or at the graveside service.

Dennis, the son of Irvin and Elva (Godfrey) McCombs, was born Aug. 10, 1939 in Waterloo. While he was in high school his family moved to Newton, where he graduated from Newton High School in the class of 1957. Dennis served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1959 to 1963. He worked at the Maytag Company, until his retirement in 1992. Dennis was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and mushroom hunting. He also liked to tinker on cars and build things.

Dennis is survived by his daughter, Annette (Benny) Spears of Newton; two sons, Joseph McCombs of Newton and Dennis Lee McCombs (Best); six grandchildren, Kim, Tracy, Heather, Holly, Randy and Christopher; and nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Gwen Thomas of Mitchellville and Janice (David) Mosby of Edgerton, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary McCombs; son, Ronnie McCombs; brother-in-law, Bob Thomas; and niece, Missi Thomas.
