Supervisors to hear asbestos bids for former care facility

The former Jasper County Care Facility has set vacant since 2000, and it looks like time is now ticking on the dilapidated structure.

At Tuesday’s Jasper County Board of Supervisors meeting, the board will vote on accepting a bid to have the asbestos in the facility removed. By taking this step, the county is getting closer to its goal of demolishing the structure.

According to the agenda, two bids were submitted for the contract to remove the asbestos. Ankeny-based Rew Services Corporation placed a low bid of $29,927.

During Thursday’s Jasper County League of Womens Voters Candidates Forum, incumbent board members and candidates, Joe Brock and Dennis Carpenter, both expressed a desire to see the facility torn down. Both men were also in support of having the site become a potential a green space under the care of the Jasper County Conservation Office.

Jasper County Treasurer Doug Bishop is listed on the agenda for two items, including his office’s semi-annual report. The report, which covers the second half of the previous 2013-2014 fiscal year, shows the county having a little more than $38 million in expenditures and $37.8 million in revenues.

It also shows the county having a fund balance of $17 million as of June 30.

Bishop’s other item will focus on projected 2015 local options sales tax revenues for various participating local jurisdictions and school districts.

In other business, Dennis Simon, Jasper County Human Resources Director, will present the board with a proposed holiday for county employees.
