Newton freshmen lose four matches

DES MOINES — Newton High’s freshmen had a rough day at the Des Moines Lincoln volleyball tournament Saturday. They dropped four matches in straight sets.

“We just couldn’t find our groove. We struggled with serves, on defense and at the net,” said Jennifer Mouchka, NHS freshman coach. “There were a few times the girls fought back and played some good volleyball, but once the other team would score a couple points it seemed like they just gave up.”

West Des Moines Valley beat Newton 21-9, 21-12 and Lincoln defeat Newton 21-11, 21-10. The Cardinals lost 21-15, 21-8 to Des Moines Roosevelt in pool play, then lost 25-14, 25-7 in bracket play.

“Our girls have great potential and they’ve shown that the past few weeks. We need to learn from our mistakes, put the tournament behind us and come out Tuesday ready to play and finish our season off on a positive note,” Mouchka said.
