Lynnville-Sully girls repeat as SICL cross country champs

MONTEZUMA — Running well over the tough Montezuma course, Lynnville-Sully’s girls placed six runners in the top 15 of Thursday’s 2014 South Iowa Cedar League cross country meet. That clinched their second consecutive conference meet championship.

The Hawk boys were led to third place in their division by Canyon Kuhlmann, who finished second in the 5K race in 19 minutes, 11 seconds. BGM won the boys’ title with 44 points followed by Sigourney with 74. Lynnville-Sully scored 86 points for third while Montezuma had 93 points, Belle Plaine 96 and Keota 118.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls won convincingly with 37 points followed by North Mahaska in second with 63 points. Montezuma had 73 points and Sigourney finished fourth with 116.

Cori Rice led the girls’ 4K race until the final 60 meters, said Lynnville-Sully head coach Darin Arkema.

“She just could hold off the competitor from English Valleys,” Arkema said. Rice captured the second-place medal in 18:38. “Cori didn’t hold back, went out and raced hard to try and be conference champion.”

Madison Rasmusson, Halley James and Kasiah Ehresman landed top 10 spots for the Hawk girls. Rasmusson finished fifth in 20:11 followed by James in seventh in 20:39 and Ehresman in ninth at 20:59. Shelby Foster took 14th in 21:31.

Others placing for the Hawk girls were: 20. Kristine Jaennette, 22:23; 26. Alexis Hardenbrook, 23:24; 34. Rebecca Morningstar, 24:20; 39. Haley Breeden, 26:02.

Kuhlmann, Rice, Rasmusson, James and Ehresman earned All-SICL honors.

“Canyon executed a strong race plan to earn runner-up honors. The Bolen kid from BGM is tough, but Canyon fought to stay with him and avenged last week getting nipped by the Sigourney runner at the line, beating him tonight by 25 seconds,” Arkema said.

Luke Jones was Lynnville-Sully’s No. 2 runner for the boys, finishing 16th in 21:35. Jake Brand placed 21st in 22:47 followed by Connor Fraker in 24th in 23:15, Nic Lirio in 25th at 23:16 and Jared Bassett in 32nd at 23:44.

Kordell Mueller was 43rd in 27:50 and Brett Maasdam took 47th in 29:56.
