Volleyball, cross country, swimming postseason assignments made

Postseasons are right around the corner for Iowa high school fall sports.

Two more weeks remain in the football regular season. Volleyball regional assignments and pairings have been released. Cross country state qualifying meet assignments and girls swimming district meet assignments were announced late last week.

Newton High’s Cardinals are in the Class 4A Region 4 volleyball tournament. The Cardinals play at Oskaloosa in the opening round. Newton takes on the Indians at 7 p.m. on Oct. 27. In the other quarterfinal match pits Knoxville against host Pella.

The regional semifinal matches are Oct. 30. The winner of the Newton-Oskaloosa match plays at Grinnell while the winner of the Knoxville-Pella match plays at Indianola. The championship match is Nov. 4 at Pella.

Prairie City-Monroe was assigned to Class 3A Region 6, which also opens action Oct. 27. PCM plays North Polk at Alleman at 7 p.m. Other quarterfinal matches have Williamsburg play at Bondurant-Farrar, Benton at Mount Vernon and South Tama at East Marshall in Le Grand.

The 3A regional semifinals are Oct. 30 at Alleman and Mount Vernon. The championship match is Nov. 4 at BGM, Brooklyn.

Colfax-Mingo and Collins-Maxwell/Baxter are in the Class 2A Region 5 tournament. Lynnville-Sully is in the Class 1A Region 7 tournament. The 2A and 1A tournaments get under way Oct. 21.

Lynnville-Sully hosts HLV at 7 p.m. on Oct. 21 at Sully. Other opening-round matches in the regional are Tri-County at Montezuma, Belle Plaine at Iowa Valley, Marengo, Rivermount Collegiate at Lone Tree, Iowa Mennonite at English Valleys, North English and WACO at Burlington, Notre Dame. Keota and New London have first-round byes.

Quarterfinal matches are set for Oct. 28 in the 1A regional and the semifinals are Oct. 31. The championship match is Nov. 5 at Lone Tree.

If Colfax-Mingo’s Tigerhawks and CMB’s Raiders win two matches apiece, the two area teams would meet in a 2A Region 5 semifinal match. First, they have to focus on their opening-round matches Oct. 21.

The Tigerhawks travel to State Center to play West Marshall at 7 p.m. and the winner goes to Grundy Center on Oct. 28 for a quarterfinal match. The Raiders open against host Madrid at 7 p.m. and the winner takes on South Hamilton at Jewell in a quarterfinal match on Oct. 28.

In the other side of the bracket in the 2A regional, West Hancock plays at West Fort and Belmond-Klemme at Eagle Grove in the opening round. Lake Mills and Clairion-Goldfield-Dows await the winners in quarterfinal matches ob Oct. 28. The semifinal matches are Oct. 31 and the championship match in Nov. 5 at Hampton.

Cross country state qualifying meets are Oct. 23. The state meet is Nov. 1 at Fort Dodge’s Kennedy Park.

Newton’s Cardinals are in the Marshalltown Class 4A qualifier along with Indianola, Linn-Mar, Marshalltown, Mason City, Ottumwa, Cedar Rapids-Prairie, Southeast Polk and Waukee.

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter and Prairie City-Monroe are in the Class 2A qualifier at Pella along with Albia, Centerville, Central Decatur, Davis County, Des Moines Christian, Dike-New Hartford, East Marshall, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Grundy Center, Pella Christian, South Hardin, Union, La Porte City, and Williamsburg’s boys.

Lynnville-Sully and Colfax-Mingo are in the Class 1A state qualifier hosted by Pekin at Ottumwa’s Wildwood Park. Others in the meet are Cardinal of Eldon, Colo-NESCO, Columbus Community, Grand View Christian boys, Harmony of Farmington, Holy Trinity Catholic of Fort Madison, Keota, Maharishi of Fairfield boys, Moravia, Mormon Trail boys of Garden Grove, North Mahaska, Pekin, Pleasantville, Seymour, Sigourney, Southeast Warren, Tri-County, Twin Cedars, Van Buren, WACO, Wapello, Wayne of Corydon, West Marshall and Winfield of Mount Union.

NCMP’s Aquagirls are in the swimming and diving regional at Indianola. The regional diving is Oct. 30 at Southeast Polk then the regional swim meet is Nov. 1 at the Indianola YMCA. Other teams in the regional are Carroll, Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln, Des Moines Roosevelt, Fairfield, Indianola, Ottumwa, Perry and Waukee. The state diving and swimming meet is Nov. 7 and 8 at Marshalltown.
