Harriette Weirick

Harriette I. Weirick, 86, of Colfax, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2014, in Newton. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16 at the Colfax United Methodist Church. The family will also greet friends one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow in the Colfax Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Colfax First United Methodist Church and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.

Harriette I. Huntrod, daughter of Harrison and Anna (Larsen) Huntrod, was born Oct. 30, 1927, in Nevada. At the age of four the family moved to Colfax. She received her education at Colfax High School, graduating in 1945. Following graduation she attended and graduated from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. On Aug. 22, 1947, she married John A. Weirick of Colfax, who just returned from Service. Harriette was a standout basketball player in both high school and college. She was team captain and helped her high school team advance to the state tournament in 1943, 1944 and 1945. After high school Harriette was invited to play with Iowa Wesleyan College of Mt. Pleasant in the National Tournament in St. Joe, Mo. She was named Honorable Mention All American for the tournament. While attending the American Institute of Business she traveled to towns across the country and played basketball helping AIB win many games. After graduating from AIB she did secretarial work at several companies including American Optical, the Monroe Company and the Denniston & Partridge Lumber Company in both Colfax and Newton, where she worked for 18 years and retired in 1989. Harriette was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church in Colfax. She loved hosting family holiday dinners, doing crafts, flower gardening, and playing bridge and dominoes with friends and family.

Preceding her in death were her parents Harrison and Anna Huntrod; her younger sister Carolyn Gafford; and three brother-in-laws, Lawrence Tiedje, Lloyd Henderson and Lloyd Gafford.

Survivors include her husband John of 67 years; sons Jim (Jill) of Rochester, Minn., and Steve Weirick of Urbandale; her three sisters, Marge Tiedje, Ruth Mallory and Helen Henderson; four grandchildren, Laura (Tyler) Lecy of Mound, Minn., John Mark Weirick (Kati) of Greensville, S.C., Lee Weirick of Rochester, Minn., and Ryan Weirick (Hannah) of Ankeny; and one little red-headed great-grandchild Noah David Lecy, 2.
