Supervisors to vote on pet costume contest

At Tuesday’s meeting, the Jasper County Board of Supervisors will hear two requests from community members for events at the courthouse and vote on approval of Sheriff John Halferty’s quarterly report.

Sharon Wallway, owner of Pet Kingdom in Newton, is coming to the board to ask for permission to hold a pet costume contest 5 p.m., Oct. 30 on the courthouse square. Wallway was originally on the agenda when the board last met on Sept. 23 but the vote was tabled.

The Festival of Trees have become an annual tradition for Jasper County 4-H clubs. Every year, the group decorates Christmas trees in the courthouse rotunda as a way to raise funds for local charitable organizations, and 4-H is asking to continue the tradition.

If the board approves 4-H’s request, setup would take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 24, and removal would happen between 5 and 7 p.m. on Dec. 29.

In the final order of business, the board will review and vote on Halferty’s report. According to the quarterly report — which includes the months of July, August and September — the sheriff’s office collected $152,228.39 in receipts and dispersed $161,946.05.

The sheriff’s office fund balance as of Sept. 30 is $11,623.69 and it began the quarter with a fund balance of $21,341.25.
