Aquagirls dominate

MARSHALLTOWN — Morgann Eide, Chelsea Trotter and Anna Barr provided much-needed points to NCMP’s run to a victory over Southeast Polk in a triangular meet at Marshalltown Tuesday. The Aquagirls’ divers went 1-2-5 in their event, which proved to be important in a close competition with the Rams.

NCMP swept both the varsity and junior varsity competitions against both Southeast Polk and Marshalltown. The closest matchup was against Southeast Polk in varsity action with the Aquagirls winning 58-44. The NCMP varsity rolled past Marshalltown 79-23.

The NCMP junior varsity defeated Marshalltown, 70-32, and Southeast Polk, 63-38.

“Our divers were outstanding tonight with Morgann winning the event with a score of 211.80 and Chelsea snagging second with a score of 188.20,” said Sarah Patterson, NCMP head coach. “These ladies looked terrific. Anna Barr, a senior, competed in her last diving meet and did well, placing fifth with a score of 146.25.”

NCMP opened the meet by winning both the junior varsity and varsity medley relay events. Sydney Jenkins, Hannah Rhoads, Hannah Scotton and Samantha Hedrick combined for the varsity win in 1 minute, 55.42 seconds. The junior varsity foursome of Abby Jolivette Olivia Maharry, Elizabeth Myers and Kaelee Knoll won its race.

The Aquagirls took over the butterfly events and the winners were not even regular swimmers of the even, Patterson said. Sierra Griffith won the junior varsity race. Jenkins won the varsity race with a “sizzling time” of 1:05.75 and Elizabeth Myers took second in 1:08.47.

Scotton, Jenkins, Rachel Prendergast and Hedrick swam close to their season best time in winning the 200-yard freestyle relay race in 1:43.61. That came after NCMP’s junior varsity team of Jessica Zahn, Jolivette, Alexis DeVries and Willa Colville claimed a victory.

“Sophomore and new-this-year to swimming, Kaitlyn Barnes did her first 500 freestyle. The team was so proud of her, and everyone was cheering her on,” Patterson said.

“Overall, it was great meet for this time of season. Fatigue has set in and it’s a constant battle to be a warrior at the meets. I am proud of the girls for how they raced and went after their times.”

Katherine Thorpe had her best time in the 100 backstroke, 1:17.58, placing her second in the junior varsity race. Rhoads swam the 100 back for the first time and placed second in the varsity race with a very fast 1:06.66, Patterson said.

Hedrick won the varsity 100 breaststroke in 1:11.73 and DeVries won the junior varsity event in 1:22.97. The NCMP junior varsity 400 freestyle relay team of Stout, Griffith, Colville and Knoll won with a time of 4:06.85. In varsity competition, NCMP placed second and third.

NCMP goes to Boone Thursday.
