Usual runners near the front for CMB, Colfax-Mingo

ELDORA — Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s Mark Deutsch and Colfax-Mingo’s Kennedi Hostetter finishing near the front of the field is starting to seem like clockwork.

The two area runners once again ran by the majority of their competitors Saturday at the 42nd South Hardin Invitational at Pine Lake Country Club.

Deutsch won the boys 5K race, beating 67 other runners to the finish line in 17 minutes, 32 seconds. It was his third first-place finish of the season and the seventh time in eight races he’s won or placed second.

Deutsch led CMB to a third-place finish in the 10-team field.

“He (Deutsch) was pretty upset with his performance on Monday,” CMB head coach Jerry Meinerts said, referring to Deutsch’s fifth-place finish on Sept. 29 at Nevada. “It was good to see him focused today and run his race, and beat some really good runners.”

Hostetter placed 12th out of 76 runners in the girls 4K run at Pine Lake, posting a time of 17:24. The Tigerhawk senior continued her streak of placing high enough to earn a medal at every race she’s competed in this season.

CMB’s Winter Brown also had a strong showing in the girls race. Brown posted her second-best finish of the year by crossing the finish line in 10th place with a time of 17:16. She led her team Saturday as the Raiders competed without one of their top runners, Heather Jessen.

CMB’s girls finished seventh out of 10 teams.

Neither Colfax-Mingo’s girls squad or boys squad had enough runners to score as a team as several team members attended the Race for the Cure in Des Moines. The Tigerhawks had four girls compete at the meet and received a season-best time of 18:57 from McKinzie Tjaden.

“It was a very cold and windy day, but the kids did a great job battling the elements and the course,” Colfax-Mingo head coach Zach Tomas said.

Other notable performances included CMB’s Colin Thomson placing seventh in 18:27 and Alex Lewis pacing Colfax-Mingo with a time of 22:32.
