NHS cross country teams run

MARSHALLTOWN — Running on the course they’ll compete on to qualify for the 2014 state meet, Newton High’s cross country teams came out second in a small meet hosted by Marshalltown Monday. Marshalltown stepped in to host a meet after Norwalk canceled its Monday competition because of poor course conditions.

On Oct. 23, Newton will join other Class 4A teams to run the Marshalltown Community College cross country course at a district meet.

“It was nice to get out and see what is likely to be our state qualifying course,” said Rachelle Tipton, NHS girls’ head coach. “The girls all ran well and looked strong. It was a good tune-up for Thursday’s meet.”

There were four teams in the varsity girls’ division Monday with Pella winning with 33 points. Newton placed second with 57 points followed by Norwalk with 64 and Marshalltown with 71 points.

Newton junior Grace Coen won the 4K race in 15 minutes, 10 seconds. Senior Hailey Coy posted a sixth-place finish in 16:53 followed by seniors Autumn Hunt in 14th at 18:07 and Anna Barr at 21st in 18:41. Freshman Tessa Keeton finished 22nd in 18:43 and sophomore Michaella Cope was 23rd in 18:51.

In the boys’ varsity race, Pella won with 16 points. Newton took second with 60 points, just ahead of Marshalltown with 61 points.

Jacob Thomas, a senior, led the Cardinal boys with a fifth-place time of 17:29 for the 5K race. Freshmen Jack Callaghan and Mikey Bradley finished 10th and 13th, respectively, in 18:36 and 19:03. Senior Justin Simms ran 15th in 19:15 followed by freshman Dylan Main in 17th at 20:00 and junior Zach Theis in 18th at 20:10.

The Cardinal junior varsity boys were third in their division with 71 points. Tyler Dafflitto took 14th in 19:57 followed by Noah Sander in 23rd in 20:22, Ross Hull in 34th in 21:21, Jarom Williams in 45th at 23:33, Blake Robson in 47th at 23:32 and Chad Nolan in 50th at 24:16.

Jordyn Soule ran the junior varsity girls’ 4K race in 19:13 to claim 10th place. Marisa Modlin was 23rd in 21:05 and Annie Hurt finished 31st in 22:36.

Newton’s cross country teams head to the Fort Dodge Invitational on Thursday then they prepare for the Little Hawkeye Conference meet on Monday at Dallas Center-Grimes.
