Cardinals, Mustangs, Raiders win; Hawks, Tigerhawks lose

Newton, Prairie City-Monroe and Collins-Maxwell/Baxter recorded wins in Week 6 of the Iowa high school football season. Colfax-Mingo and Lynnville-Sully took it on the chin Friday night. Here is the area game roundup:

Newton 17, Ballard 14

HUXLEY — “It was ugly but it went through and that’s what matters,” said senior Nick Easley of his 35-yard field goal with 6.5 seconds remaining in Friday’s Class 3A District 6 contest. Easley’s three-pointer lifted the Newton High Cardinals to a 17-14 win over host Ballard.

Newton never trailed in the contest. Deonne Harris bolted for a 90-yard touchdown run with under four minutes left in the first half. The Cardinals led 7-0 but not for long as the Bombers used four running plays to tie it up.

The teams went in at halftime, tied 7-7. Newton took the second-half kickoff to mount a scoring drive. It was on a fourth-and-12 play that senior Tristan Peters scrambled out of trouble and went 32 yards to the end zone.

Ballard was able to pull even again with 7:17 left in the game. The Bombers had the football and driving with four minutes remaining in the game.

“Our defense was spotted at times, but we came up with turnovers and stops when we needed them. None was bigger than the one at the end on that fourth-down play,” said Ed Ergenbright, Newton head coach. “We were going to try to get the football close enough to give Nick an chance to kick it. We did that and he drove it through.”

The Bombers had a fourth-and-two at their own 46. The Cardinal defense stopped them cold and took over with 1:32 on the clock. Tyler Wood connected with tight end Jordan Travis for a first down on a third-and-18 pass play then found Easley to move the ball to the 14-yard line with 10 seconds left.

"After I made the catch, I was in the zone," Easley said. "This a huge for us after last week's loss at Gilbert. We wanted this won."

Travis led the charge defensively with 12 solo tackles and four assisted tackles and Bryce Tish ahd nine solo stops and three assisted tackles. Duncan Lee had a quarterback sack. Wood and Peters each had an interception while Aex Miller and Easley had a fumble recovery apiece.

With the win, the Cardinals improved to 3-1 in district play and 5-1 overall. They step out of district play to play at home against Pella next.

Newton’s freshmen suffered their first loss of the season Friday, dropping a 24-12 decision to Ballard.
