Area volleyball roundup: PCM, Colfax-Mingo lose to ranked foes

NEVADA — Prairie City-Monroe’s attempt at back-to-back conference wins came up empty Thursday night as the Mustangs lost to Class 3A No. 3 Nevada, 25-19, 25-19, 25-13.

Courtney Van Houweling led PCM with six kills and a match-high 14 digs. Ashley VanGorp added five kills for the Mustangs (6-16, 1-5) and Jayci Vos contributed seven assists. Katie VandeWall and Emma Williams both had solid nights from the service line; VandeWall was 10 of 11 and Williams 9 of 9.

The win was Nevada’s 13th in a row, giving the Cubs a 6-0 mark in Heart of Iowa play and a conference-leading 22nd overall victory.

A balanced Nevada offense featured three players — Kati Cassabaum, Amaris Hornbuckle and Abby Stephenson — with eight kills a piece. They all benefitted from Michaela Matuska’s 24 assists.

PCM’s next match is Tuesday at home against Saydel.

STORY CITY — Colfax-Mingo lost its 10th consecutive match in a straight-set defeat at the hands of Class 3A No. 12 Roland-Story Thursday night, 25-9, 25-10, 25-11.

“Roland Story is a great team, top three in the conference, probably top two,” Colfax-Mingo head coach Michelle Grant said, “but we didn’t give ourselves a chance. Too many missed serves and missed chances.”

The Tigerhawks recorded 10 kills as a team.Dakota Hostetter and Ries Wilson both had four each.

Megan Earles led Colfax-Mingo with five assists.

Roland-Story senior Laruen Himan posted match-highs with 17 kills and five aces.

Colfax-Mingo (2-13, 0-5) plays Melcher-Dallas in its next match Tuesday at home.
