Library home to free music, Kindle Fire basics class

Wilbor or Freegal asking you for a PIN?

Logging into Wilbor, Freegal and our library will now require your PIN (as well as Freegal and the catalog). Your PIN right now is CHANGEME (one word, all caps) and you will want to do 2 things at some point: Log into the library catalog using your library card and CHANGEME as the default PIN. Immediately go to My Account, choose User PIN Change, and choose another PIN for yourself (4-8 characters).
Before you log out, go to Email Change Request and add your email address to your account. That way, if you ever forget your PIN you will be able to change it 24/7 without our assistance. We're instituting this added security in anticipation of upgrading the catalog for bill paying online in the near future. If you have any problems with this process, please call the library at 641-792-4108.

Warm Clothing Drive

The Newton Public Library will be conducting a Warm Clothing Drive through Oct. 15. Donations of new sweatshirts/hoodies, gloves, hats, scarves, coats and socks can be dropped off at the circulation desk. Clothing will be distributed to Newton Community Schools to be given to kids of all ages in need. Items must be new or they will not be accepted. If you have any questions contact Nicole Lindstrom or Phyllis Peter at 641-792-4108.

Kindle Fire Basics Class

At 6 p.m. Monday, join us in the library meeting room for a class on Kindle Fire Basics. Learn how to download eBooks free through the library, connect to wi-fi, change settings and sync email. Bring your fully charged Kindle Fire, Amazon Log-In and Password and your library card (if you have one). Participants do not need to register for this class.

Ghost Hunter Program

At 6 p.m. on Oct.16 the Iowa Paranormal Advanced Research Team (IPART) will be presenting in the meeting room. IPART, a paranormal research organization dedicated to investigating phenomenon that are out of the ordinary or unexplained, will present audio and visual evidence of findings at Iowa locations; describe how they conduct investigations; discuss their technology/devices; explain signs of a haunting; and answer questions from the audience. This program is open to all ages and free to the public.

Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Enter a pumpkin in our Book Character Pumpkin Decorating Contest! Decorate a pumpkin as a book character: paint, dress, and/or accessorize it, but do not carve it. Entries will be accepted Oct. 20-24 and can be made individually or as a family. Pumpkins will be displayed in the Children’s Library, and the public is invited to vote ballot-style for their favorite entry. The winner will be announced on Oct. 31 and will win a gift basket of children’s books, DVDs, and other Halloween treats. Entry forms are available at the Youth Service’s Librarian’s desk.

Download Free Music from the Library

Download and own songs from the extensive Freegal database! Up to three songs per week, or one song and a music video. Every Monday, three new downloads will again be available! Go to www.newton.lib.ia.us, click on Freegal, log in with your up-to-date library card, and explore the 7 million songs from 28,000 recording labels. You can also get the app for your mobile device. Need help? Call the Information Desk, 641-792-4108.

New Book Club @ the Library

The Newton Public Library started a new Professional Development book club. Our first book is “Crucial Conversations” by Grenny Patterson. If you would like to join, stop by the Information Desk to pick up a copy of the book. Our fist discussion date will be at 6 p.m. on Oct. 15. The club will meet every third Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Library Meeting Room and is open to all adults.
