Newton police warn locals about phone scam

The Newton Police Department is warning locals about a phone scam in which the caller claims to be a professional process server, or a collection agency. The caller will claim that you have an outstanding debt that has been turned over to them for collection.

Police say the caller will most likely ask for your full name, date of birth and social security number so they can “verify their information.” They will also offer to resolve the debt over the phone by credit card. When you are reluctant to give them any information they will threaten that they are going to have the sheriff, police department or other law enforcement agency come and arrest you on a felony charge.

The Newton Police Department is reminding citizens to always be suspicious of anybody that calls or texts asking for personal information. Never give credit card, bank, or Social Security information over the phone unless you initiated the call in the first place.

If you receive one of these calls please report it to your local law enforcement agency, and also the FTC at 1-877-FTC-HELP or you can file your complaint online at www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov.
