Cardinal harriers run at Johnston

JOHNSTON — Results are out for Thursday’s Johnston Invitational cross country meet after a computer malfunction in the timing system at the meet. There’s just one problem.

The meet was divided into a large-school and a small-school division. The results are not divided.

Newton High’s head coaches Rachelle Tipton for the girls and Tom Bartello for the boys are sure their teams finished fourth in the large-school division. Overall, the results have the Newton girls and boys in sixth place. There were 17 boys’ teams competing and 15 girls’ teams in the overall meet.

The top performance of the day for Newton was Grace Coen, taking third overall and second in the large-school division. Coen ran the 4K girls’ race in 16 minutes, 20 seconds. Haliey Coy was Newton’s No. 2 runner in the race in 18:29 followed by Ellie Horn at 19:14 and Anna Barr at 19:26.

Autumn Hunt came across in 19:41 for the Cardinal girls. Tessa Keeton finished the race in 20:11 and Michaela Cope ran it in 21:03.

“Despite the hills, we saw similar times to the Gilbert meet and even had a couple faster which shows the progress being made,” said Tipton of the girls. “I am excited to see what we can do at Oskaloosa.”

For the Cardinal boys, Jacob Thomas posted a time of 17:40 for the 5K race, finishing 13th overall. Mikey Bradley ran the race in 18:18 followed by Jack Callaghan in 18:45, and Justin Fischer in 19:46.

Harrison McCarey was the No. 5 runner for Newton’s boys in the race, posting a time of 20:09. Dylan Main and Chase Dykstra were right behind him at 20:11.

Newton’s teams head to Oskaloosa Tuesday.
