Betty Thompson Nuese

Betty Thompson Nuese, 93, passed away peacefully Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, at the Southridge Nursing Home, in Marshalltown, under Hospice care.

Betty Hammer was born July 3, 1921, to Burl and Amy (Shields) Hammer. She attended school in Kellogg up to the 10th grade. She married Hugh Robert Thompson on Sept. 24, 1938. They later divorced. She married Art Nuese on Dec. 19, 1960. When Art passed away in l978, she returned to Newton to look after her father. She loved to dance three times a week, until the age of 80. Waltzing and round dancing were her favorite dances during the Big Band Era. She liked to do embroidery while watching her favorite show “Bonanza.” She enjoyed traveling to the western states but her favorite trips were to the ocean in Florida. She had two companions, her cat, Tabby, and her dog, Buddy. They both brought her much joy.

Betty is survived by her three children, Carolyn (Glen) Amdahl of Orchard, Hugh (Francine) Thompson of Gilman, and Dale (Glenda) Thompson of Ferguson; grandchildren, David (Lisa) Amdahl of Ames, Donna (Dave) Muth of McCallsburg, Dixie (Jeff) Ouverson of Fertile, Vicki (Gary) Knaack of Grundy Center, Travis (Teresa) of Pella, Kevin (Rebecca) Thompson of Eden Prairie, Minn., Jill Thompson of Cedar Rapids, Steve (Jenny) Thompson of Kellogg, Terry (Clarissa) Thompson of Gilman and Lisa (Mike) Sinnwell of Newton; 17 great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and her sister Janice (Glenn) Cardwell of Greensboro, N.C.

Betty was proceeded in death by her parents; two husbands; step son, Duane Nuese; and her dancing partner Richard (Dick) Stackhouse.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, also at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. The Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Betty and her family.
