Newton rocks Marshalltown; area teams go 2-2

Area high school football teams played Week 2 of the 2014 season, going 3-2 Friday night. Here's a roundup of the five varsity games. Read more on the games in Monday's Newton Daily News.

Newton 45, Marshalltown 20

MARSHALLTOWN — On a crisp fall evening, Newton High’s Cardinals let two first-half leads slip away and they trailed host Marshalltown’s Bobcats, 20-17, at halftime.

Enter Joseph Banfield. Banfield’s third-quarter opening kickoff bolt of 85 yards for the go-ahead touchdown provided Newton the spark it needed for a 45-20 victory over Marshalltown. The Cardinals scored two touchdowns in the first four minutes of the second half and shut down the Bobcat offense for 24 minutes.

Newton’s defense clamped down hard The Cardinals cashed in on three Bobcat turnovers for 21 second-half points — a fumble recovery and interception set up two offensive scores then Tyler Wood sealed the win with a pick-six, returning an interception 55 yards for a touchdown.

“At halftime, we talked about playing more as a family and thinking about what we were doing,” said Wes Streeter, who had one of five quarterback sacks for the Cardinals.

Newton head coach Ed Ergenbright said his coaching staff did a great job of making adjustments at halftime and “our kids executed very well. That was a very good half of football from our guys.”

The Cardinals had a big bolt in the first half also. A Nick Easley field goal put the Cards up 3-0, then Deonne Harris dashed 65 yards for the first touchdown of the game. The Bobcats clawed back to tie the game at 10-10 midway through the second quarter.

Newton went up 17-10 on a Wood to Easley 26-yard touchdown pass play. Marshalltown scored the final 10 points in the first half for a 20-17 lead at the break.

Then it was all Newton in the second half.

“Now, we get ready for district play,” Ergenbright said. The Cardinals (2-0) open Class 3A District 6 play Friday at Grinnell.

Newton freshmen posted an 18-7 win over Marshalltown.

Pella Christian 38, Lynnville-Sully 0

PELLA — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks came up empty against host Pella Christian’s Eagles Friday night.

“That was a good football team we faced Friday night,” said Mike Parkinson, Hawk head coach. “We played OK at times, but we really didn’t come to play. We will be ready to play next week.”

The Hawks (0-2) host Colfax-Mingo (2-0) in Class A District 7 action in Sully Friday.

Colfax-Mingo 21, Clarke, Osceola 19

COLFAX — A second straight productive performance by Colfax-Mingo's defense resulted in the team's second straight win Friday night.

The Tigerhawks created four turnovers, including a fumble recovery with less than four minutes to play to preserve their lead.

Junior receiver Blake Summy caught two touchdown passes from fellow junior quarterback Jared Myers.

After Colfax-Mingo (2-0) built a 14-0, first-quarter lead, Clarke (0-2) slowly fought its way back and came within a point at 14-13 after scoring on the opening drive of the second half. The Indians drove down to the Tigerhawks' 34-yard line with less than one minute to play in the fourth, but a sack and a penalty moved them back behind the 50-yard line before a final heave on the last play of the game fell incomplete.

The Tigerhawks begin district play next week against Lynnville-Sully.

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter 32, Roland-Story 26

STORY CITY — The Raiders may not have played as well as head coach Rob Luther would've liked leading up to next week's district play, but CMB made enough plays to walk away with its first road win of the season.

Luther's squad found itself in a back-and-forth game with host Roland-Story all night and wasn't able to clinch the victory until a late interception from junior Brady Stover with about 40 seconds left in the game.

Junior quarterback Nate Bishop helped spark CMB's offense to 22 second-half points after the two teams were tied at 10 at halftime. The Raiders totaled more than 450 yards of offense in the victory.

CMB is on the road next week at Davis County, Bloomfield.

Central Decatur 20, Prairie City-Monroe 7

LEON — The Mustangs dropped their road opener Friday night, resulting in the team's first 0-2 start in three seasons.

No stats were available as of Friday night.

PCM hosts Centerville next week to begin Class 2A District 7 action.
