Newton Police Department

• Shelby R. Williams, 36, of Newton, is charged with five counts of forgery after authorities were alerted Aug. 27. Officers found Williams had been writing checks from the victim’s account from Aug. 4 through Aug. 8. Three checks were to Hy-Vee in the amounts of $100.11, $49.66 and $98.03 and two to Caseys in the amounts of $40.01 and $21.92. She was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Amanda R. Reed, 34, of Ankeny, is charged with possession of controlled substance first and second offense, possession of drug paraphernalia and child endangerment after authorities pulled over her vehicle at the intersection of Highway. F-14 S. and Highway. F-62 W. Officers stopped Reed for a traffic violation when she admitted to possessing a digital scale that had meth residue on it. They also found two spoons with meth residue as well as two prescription pills bottles that were not hers after performing a search. Reed’s 15-year-old daughter was with Reed and within reach of the drugs. A warrant was issued for Reed.

• Michael J. Large, 41, of Ankeny, is charged with consumption of alcohol in a public place after authorities were called to S. 86th Ave. E. at 3:31 a.m. Saturday. Officers were responding to an accident when they noticed Large walking down the street with a beer bottle, actively drinking. Large admitted to drinking an additional bottle and was found to have bloodshot, watery eyes and smelled strongly of alcohol. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Derek L. Gladson, 26, of Newton, is charged with domestic abuse assault after authorities were called to the 7000 block of Highway 14 South at 12:15 a.m. Monday. Officers spoke with the victim who stated that Gladson had consumed 13 to 14 alcoholic beverages and then became upset because he felt the victim had purposely poked him in the eye and would not turn up the radio. Gladson then allegedly hit him several times and the victim feared for his life. The victim had a swelling left eye and multiple cuts on the forehead, as well as multiple scrapes on the left side of his body. A warrant was issued for Gladson.

• Travis W. Howerton, 30, of Kellogg, is charged with assault and second-degree criminal mischief after authorities were called to 12790 N. 39th Ave. E. #630 at 4:05 p.m. Aug. 27. The victim claimed that Howerton ran into the driver’s side of his car then left. Upon returning, Howerton parked his car in front of the victim’s property and told him he wanted to fight. Howerton allegedly took a golf club and hit the victim’s rear and side windows. The victim said Howerton punched his right eye and the left side of his face. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• James M. E. Pietz, 24, of Newton, is charged with carrying weapons after authorities were called to 711 First St. S. at 12:30 a.m. Saturday. Officers stopped Pietz on a traffic violation and discovered he possessed a loaded revolver and an open container of an alcoholic beverage inside the vehicle. He was taken to the Jasper County Jail.
