Damman, Shores top Newton scorecard at Fort Dodge

FORT DODGE — Derek Damman and Devin Shores came to play at Tuesday’s Fort Dodge Invitational golf tournament. Newton’s Damman and Shores posted individual scores in the 70s for the 18-hole tournament.

Damman, a junior, carded a 77 on the Fort Dodge Country Club course to lead the Cardinals to a sixth-place finish in a 16-team field. Shores, a senior, was one shot back of his teammate with a 78.

Freshman Austin Reynolds came in with an 80 and junior Payton Thomas fired an 86 for Newton. The Cardinals had a team score of 321.

“I thought we played much better today, and I feel we will continue to improve throughout the year,” said Pat Riley, Newton head coach.

Ankeny Centennial won the team title with a 296 followed by Waukee at 301 and Johnston at 303. Sioux City Heelan finished with a 316 for fourth and Ankeny was fifth at 317.

Newton’s Cardinal Invitational is Thursday at Westwood Golf Course. Teams tee off at noon.

“We’re looking forward to another bunch of quality opponents to face in Ottumwa, Southeast Polk, Marshalltown, and more,” Riley said. “We will have our biggest field (10 teams) since I have started coaching here. I think we will host a fine tournament with a big help from our parents who are lining up food for all of the players and coaches.”
