NHS freshmen win two matches

Newton High’s freshmen got their first taste of high school volleyball Thursday in their own NHS Early Bird Freshman Invitational.

The Cardinals recorded two wins and lost three matches on the night. Only in a 21-9, 21-8 loss to tournament champion West Des Moines Dowling Catholic were the Newton freshmen out of a match in the event. Dowling Catholic went 5-0.

Ankeny Centennial finished 4-1 followed by Des Moines Roosevelt at 3-2 and Newton at 2-3. Ankeny had a 1-4 mark and Knoxville went 0-5.

The Cardinals defeated Knoxville 21-12, 21-7 and rallied to defeat Ankeny 8-21, 21-18, 15-11. They lost 21-14, 21-18 to Roosevelt and 21-10, 21-13 to Ankeny Centennial.

The freshmen play next in a tournament at BGM on Tuesday.
