Harold V. ‘Tiny’ Harned

Harold Vincent “Tiny” Harned, 89, of Newton followed his last flight plan to eternal life on Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at Nelson Manor in Newton, under the care of Skiff Hospice.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 20 at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, with Deacon Dan Goetz officiating. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials are being designated to Shriner’s Hospital or St. Jude’s Hospital. Burial will be in the Veteran’s Section at Newton Union Cemetery.

Tiny, the son of David Louis and Julia Ann (Barry) Harned, was born Sept. 19, 1924, in Atchison, Kan., the youngest of 13 children. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1942. Tiny served his country during World War II with the 2532nd Army Air Force Base Unit. On Feb. 15, 1946, Tiny married the love of his life, E. June Harper, at Ft. Sam Huston, San Antonia, Texas. They spent nearly 62 years together and raised their three children, Vincent, Susan and James. Tiny was a devoted husband and father.

Tiny loved flying and everything connected with it. His career included working as a pilot, flight instructor and aircraft mechanic with Martin School of Flying, Marsh Aviation in Walla Walla, Wash.; Boeing Aircraft, Seattle, Wash.; McDonnell Douglas Aircraft, Kansas City, Mo.; and Johnson Aviation in Newton.

He began the aircraft mechanics program at Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo. In 1969, Tiny joined Winpower in Newton as sales and service correspondent and retired as sales manager of the export department.

He was very proud to have earned the Presidential “E” Award for increasing international sales at Winpower. Tiny started Harned Rental and spent many years in the storage rental business, retiring at the age of 84. He was a member of the American Legion Post #111 and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Those left to honor Tiny’s memory include his son, Vincent (Ann) Harned of Oskaloosa; his daughter, Susan (Jim) Jarchow of Dubuque; his son, James (Rebecca) Harned of Newton; his 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends

Tiny was preceded in death by his wife, June on Jan. 26, 2008; his parents; all of his brothers and sisters; and several nieces and nephews.
